Wow! Not a bad law. I hope it only applies to new boats. Forcing folks to retrofit can be problematic (law suits). But what really surprised me is that Alabama made such a "progressive" move. Not ranking on AL, but they are not known for pro-active stances and change.

Good for them!

Mark

have it, use it sometimes (alone, rough water).

installed it on the dash at first but it interfered with steering - now it's on the starboard side gunwale, no problem.

I just went downstream from the control box a couple feet & spliced into the ignition wire.

I have one and use it always. Because:

1) When the boat was new, I went over a big wave too fast, came off the seat & it scared the bejeebers out of me.

2) To set an example for the kids.

However, before I got used to it, I leaned & reached too far forward while going not too fast, but fast enough to almost fall on my face when it pulled off and cut the motor.

Overall, I think it's a good idea. Protects me and others if I fall overbaord, which I never plan to do, but who does plan it?

Don't have one, probably wouldn't use it if I did. The likelihood of being thrown from the helm is...well...does it ever happen? Are there stories of that out there? More likely to be thrown off while doing something on another part of the boat, where you wouldn't be wearing it anyway.

I've considered one of the radio-type kill switches which stops the motor upon submersion. Then I could move about the boat and still be covered.

You don't have to be tied to the helm. Just unclip yourself when you want to move about or not use it, and clip yourself when you want to use it.

Last weekend I took my jet boat out for a spin and being I was by myself, I always loop the lanyard around my wrist just in case something happens. Coming home across the bay running flat out, I felt my cap starting to blow. Reached up with the wrong hand to catch it. Took a few seconds to figure out why the engine quit suddenly.
