I stripped down the floor on my 1985 Bayliner Capri Bowrider it was rotted completely. How many srtringers are there one on each side?
I drilled into them and the wood chips that came out are wet but not rotted does this need to be fixed and how
on the other side i cut part of the top off and noticed rotted wood should i peel off the top the whole way? whats the best way to repair that?
Also after a new deck is put down can i just put a resin over the top of the plywood. i never worked with fibergass and do not know how to use it.
any info would be greatly appreciated

Im new here but Im doing the same project same boat. I wiill be using 3/4 exterior grade plywood for the deck and will be using resin and chopped matting on the deck the matting makes it strong the resin waterproofs it also dont forget to resin the underside of the decking.

Yes, remove the entire deck being sure to save the bow section for a template. The stringers will need to be replaced as well, as wet stringers lead to rotten stringers, and rotten stringers lead to saw dust and a very bad boat deck. Total gutting of the boat is the first place to start, if you can wait until after the snow flies do it then when you may not be able to use the craft on open water.

Drilling small shallow holes up near the splash well and down near the bilge will tell you if the transom is rotten and needs replacing. Remember, if the material coming out is wet, replace the WHOLE transom as the wood will not stop rotting once started.

Start by providing some information about the boat... year, make, model, i/o or ob, etc. pictures will help too.

Its a 1985 bayliner capri bowrider with a force 85 hp out board motor
I have a friend who will glass the floor for me
my main concern is the transom and stringers how to replace them and which one to do first
thanks

first you need to get it gutted. get the old deck out, but like someone mentioned, save the bow peices if you can to use as a template.

for the transom, is this an outboard or i/o? the cap may need to be removed, thats why you should post a pic so we can give you further advice.

generally, you should do the transom FIRST before doing the stringers.

Take a look at other peoples' restore threads. Most of your questions have already been answered with photos in others' restore threads. There are others doing the same exact boat restore you are and are finished or quite far along. Track their progress and you can pretty much get your hand held by doing what they did. That is how most of us learned this stuff, myself included. I am doing a 1990 Capri restore you can check out, but I would recommend taking a look at the resto projects on your exact boat first.

From reading your post, I would say you are a good candidate for checking out my 10 steps list, as it will likely be pretty meaningful in your restoration. (link is in my sig)

Good luck, and welcome

Excellent 10 steps list :)

You should do one for "Bad Ideas for improving boats or saving money on a restore" -

* Use plastic deck planking for stringers
* Use a cheap exterior grade plywood
* Caulk everything with silicone
* Use Bondo body filler to patch hull holes
* Use car engine parts to fix an I/O
* ......

:)

As far as the foam that is in the bow under the seats... I will need to rip all that out to do the rebuild correctly. What 2 part foam should I put back in or does the bow realy not need it?

Mine originally had a layer of 2 oz cloth bonded to the wood deck. That is what I went with when I replaced the deck. I am going to paint over it with a light non-skid paint like it was originally. I would recommend protecting the wood like this.

I dont know man, I think you would want a bit more glass than that. I think the "norm" is 8oz of whatever, however. Be it cloth, mat or a combination of the two.
