I resisted the idea of buying a boat for decades, partly because I couldn't afford it at the time (but that doesn't stop a lot of people), and partly because of the stories I'd hear from boat owner coworkers who shredded their props or had engine problems the previous weekend.
The GPS/sonar combo is one of the reasons I finally decided to take the plunge last year. With the LakeMaster chip installed, we can see where the rocks are before the rocks see us! Other encouragement came from the increased reliability of motors, better decking material, construction with closer tolerances, and better warranties.
Of course, all of these improvements came at an increased cost, too!
