Re: Do you own an alumium or fiberglass boat?

growing up, we went from wood to glass 13' to 2 starcrafts @ 16' to 17' glass. We're in salt water with a lot of open water. I like glass much better, for operation, maintenance and longevity.
However I prefer my aluminum canoe over glass, and enjoy the 12' and 14' jonboats we use, too.
Judging from what people use around here, I would say that in salt water and choppy water, once you go past the jon's, glass is preferred.

....just polish till your arms fall off. Wait then you cant ski:eek:

Dude, you need to quit the manual polishing and buy a random orbit polisher. Would make your life a lot better.....just sayin'.

There is an old saying:

"A Boat is a hole in the water surrounded by wood, into which one throws money"

I have seen people abort the saying by substituting the word "wood" with the word "fiberglass", but never saw the word "aluminum" in there.

My favorite saying though is:

"If God had intended man to build fiberglass boats he would have invented fiberglass trees"

Real boats are wood - the rest are all imitations.

BTW, I have 2 tinnies, 2 glass boats and one woodie.

I like my Glastron and it has taken quite a pounding out on the local lakes since I like to catch some air now and again doing a little wake jumping. If I could have my dream boat it would be StanCraft Wave Dagger woody.

Fiberglass? WTH is fiberglass?

1984, 14 ft., High Transom, Mirrocraft w/1994, 30 horse, tiller steered, Evinrude.

Before that a 1957 LoneStar, King Commander that I inherited from my dad.

AFAIAC, you really can't call yourself a boat owner till you have spent months trying to find a leaking rivet in the bottom of the boat, only to finally determine that a small, loose, factory installed, bolt that goes through the transom is the culprit and THAT'S why it only leaks while setting dead in the water with the operator sitting on the back seat. Duh!

Got a 15' duroboat and a 1950's arkanasa travler(15") . Had 3 alum john boats. Had wood and glass but none can take the harsh treatment that a tinny can take.

My sailboat is fiberglass, a 22' O'Day.

Whenever I get a powerboat though, I would love to have an aluminum made by Alumacraft.

I currently have a fiberglass boat, but I'd love to have an Islander with an O/B. :D

Fiberglass... aluminum is for beer cans...lol :D

Actually, I'm starting my search for cheap (and small) ole aluminum boat that I can drag to the stripper pits and do some fishing.

Beer is intended to be in glass. And I don't mean fiberglass!

Think in terms or density, displacment, buoyancy, etc.

Ferrocement sinks, Aluminum sinks, even fiberglass sinks.

Wood is the only common boat building material that floats!

Re: Do you own an aluminum or fiberglass boat?

Fiberglass is all I have ever owned.

I was priviledged to live aboard the BIG steel and Aluminum one in my avitar for 5 1/2 years. Talk about maintenance....lol

I have always wanted a Criss-craft woodie. Almost bought an old broken down one a few years ago. Then I got thinking about maintenance and parts for the flat head 4 cyl. engine. I'm not made of money, again lol.

I could own a tinny. I just never have.
