I was at the local hardware store and noticed the price of chain as compaired to anchor chain at marine stores. I was thinking even adding the cost of a rust coating I would still come out way ahead.

I was thinking with time getting a bit harder and gas on the way up do you shop around a bit more for marine items?
Lately I have been shoping price a bit more.

I pretty much have to shop price but at times you have to be carefull about the quality of certian items :(
Like beer for instance - i spend the extra for what i want :p

allways allways allways buy name when it comes to beer !:D (unless of course its last call, in wich case you buy all bemaining stock reguardless of price or brand. !

if im shopping for big buck things like a motor or motor part.....its brand.....if its a smaller item that is less important like a chain....its allways price

cheers

you need to double check on that before you say chain is just chain

you can use what ever you want and most likely wont know the difference
but do understand marine chain is stainless steel or galvanized coated and does cost twice as much. you lg et what you pay for

i agree. I just had to buy some chain. I got the cheapest stuff i could find, but it was still galvanized. unfortunately i always buy according to price, thats how we can afford to run the boat and have money for other accessories. I do buy marine products when the application is neccessary though, such as engine parts, hardware, etc.

Just bought anchor chains at Lowe's. There is a difference in price and quality. The stuff at the marine shop was better coated than the stuff at Lowes. But the chain itself is galvanized...so I went ahead and did it. I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for....otherwise, we would all eat Ramen noodles, shop at Walmart for all our clothes, and live in double wides!:D

I have really been trying to shop Smart...
The money we save on chain might be a gallon of gas.
I saved a lot when I bought NAPA marine parts locally for my inboard..

I shop neither. I shop quality. :D

You can't go by name. Name brands sell junk and price point products too.

For a Joe-weekender cutting corners to save a couple of bucks probably isn't going to mean much. For others, failure is not an option. A componet or part that fails under less than ideal condtions may cost you the boat and or your life.

Was that one gallon gas you saved worth the possibly of putting your passengers at risk in the future?
