Re: Do you use an anchor? Winch?
With the wide variety of boats, locations, and uses out there; I was just curious how many people use an anchor on a regular basis and how many of those people have an anchor winch, or just pull it up and drop it manualy.
I always use an anchor, and currently am dropping it and retrieving it manualy. As I can't afford an anchor winch, I'm thinking about ghetto-rigging my own winch on the bow. Maybe use a strap winch like the one on the trailer. Then just replace the strap with the anchor line?
Anyone who would leave the dock or ramp without a proper anchor and rode on his/her boat, and the knowledge of how to anchor the boat properly is a fool. That is, unless you're boating on a farm pond.
What are your plans if you have engine failure or run out of fuel? How are you going to stay off the rocks or avoid drifting out to sea? How can you call for help if you can't tell the folks where you are because you're drifting?
As far as converting a trailer winch to an anchor
windlass, forget it. How much rode do you think you'll be able to wind on it?
If you can afford a boat big enough to need an anchor heavy enough to need mechanical help to be retrieved, you can afford a proper
windlass.
BTW: You need to put out up to 7 to 1 scope (that's the length of the rode when anchoring). That would be seventy feet of rode (line and/or chain) for ten feet of depth. You can often get by with less, but don't count on it.
