Re: Do you use an anchor? Winch?

If I am anchored deep with a lot of rode out I use an anchor lift ball, with the slip ring to re-float my anchor. Otherwise I just pull it myself. I use an aluminum Fortress, it is only 4 pounds and hold like a fat lady.

http://www.fishing-catalog.com/other products/anchor_ball.htm

We anchor often in 80 to 150 feet of water for diving. The anchor ball and ring make it easy. Of course, a good anchor like the Fortress helps. No need to carry those huge anchors, get a Fortress or Guardian, light and strong and hold great in most bottoms. Easy to pull without a windless or with the retrieval system.
I have the same anchor, the Fortress FX7 4lb one. It holds great in everything except grass.

2 anchors, armstrong method. Don't want to clutter up the boat with more stuff.

Re: Do you use an anchor? Winch?

These bouy anchor retrievers work well. I dive so we drop 3-4 times in a day ranging from 50-90 feet. I used to haul up the line witha 16 Danforth on the end of the rode. The bouy is easy and hasnt failed me all seaon. Mines a little different but the same idea as the link.

You drive the boat at 15-30 degrees off the anchor line but towards the anchor. The bouy slides down the anchor line and pulls the anchor, brings it to the surface and the anchor sits in it's holder boobing on the surface. Just pull in the line, unclip the bouy and stow the anchor.

40 foot sloop 3 anchors, 1 electric winch with manual back up
25 foot sloop 2 anchors 1 winch electric only, or in shallow water, centerboard works (up to 6.5 feet)
outboard skiff has an anchor for safety, but generally just beach it
jet boat, has an anchor but still no running engine-I'm getting there though
if i missed any i'll be sure to update, its hard to keep track

Re: Do you use an anchor? Winch?

I anchor only when I have to and there's nothing else to tie up to. If I'm fishing I'm usually around a bridge or buoy so I will tie up there if at all possible. Even if not, if there's no tide I prefer to make sure I am catching fish before anchoring. Nothing worse than dropping anchor only to see all of the fish 100 feet to the left or right.

For now I pull it up by hand, but a windlass is on my mandatory list for my next boat.

I've made both my anchors. I haven't used either yet but feel they may one day come in handy.

I filled two plastic coffee "cans" with concrete. I used eye bolts attatched to threaded plates for added holdability in the concrete.

Re: Do you use an anchor? Winch?

With the wide variety of boats, locations, and uses out there; I was just curious how many people use an anchor on a regular basis and how many of those people have an anchor winch, or just pull it up and drop it manualy.

I always use an anchor, and currently am dropping it and retrieving it manualy. As I can't afford an anchor winch, I'm thinking about ghetto-rigging my own winch on the bow. Maybe use a strap winch like the one on the trailer. Then just replace the strap with the anchor line?

Anyone who would leave the dock or ramp without a proper anchor and rode on his/her boat, and the knowledge of how to anchor the boat properly is a fool. That is, unless you're boating on a farm pond.

What are your plans if you have engine failure or run out of fuel? How are you going to stay off the rocks or avoid drifting out to sea? How can you call for help if you can't tell the folks where you are because you're drifting?

As far as converting a trailer winch to an anchor windlass, forget it. How much rode do you think you'll be able to wind on it?

If you can afford a boat big enough to need an anchor heavy enough to need mechanical help to be retrieved, you can afford a proper windlass. ;)

BTW: You need to put out up to 7 to 1 scope (that's the length of the rode when anchoring). That would be seventy feet of rode (line and/or chain) for ten feet of depth. You can often get by with less, but don't count on it.

Re: Do you use an anchor? Winch?

i have a 26 ft sailboat, and i don't have an anchor winch, but sometimes i will use the hand winch, intended for lifting the sails.
but if i motor forward, that will dislogde the anchor, then you can usually pull it up by hand.

Then I'm a fool!!

Not really though. I have two engines (seperate fuel tanks) and an electric troll motor. So if there's any kinda failure, I have back ups. ;)

Nonetheless, I just ordered a 30 pound anchor AND an electric electric anchor winch.

It's illegal to tie up to a buoy. I don't know about a bridge but I would be afraid of the guy going through from the other side who can't see your boat until he's right on top of it.

Re: Do you use an anchor? Winch?

Just to follow up here. The new boat doesn't have an electric windlass .... YET. I'm not about to pull in 200' or more of line then chain rode and an anchor.

I'd need a nap after that.
