Do zincs mount to bare metal or paint?

Hi, do I sand down the metal surface on the transom where I am going to mount my zinc or does it go right to the paint? Thanks for any info.

Minnow,<br />Zink should be mounted on the bare metal. It will not serve it's purpose if mounted on painted surface.

Thanks for replying. I am going to trace with pen around the zinc, then sand that area on the boat.
