Doel-Fin & Tracker PT175 w/ 40HP...... Great Fit!!!

I installed a Doel-Fin ($20 at Academy) on my Tracker Pro Team 175 with a 40 HP motor this past week. I have to admit that I was a little hesitant after reading some of the posts on this forum. Here are the improvements that I found for my particular case:

1) The boat gets up on plane instantly. There is no bow rise from the hole shot. Prior to installing the hydrofoil, there was significant rise, especially with two people and a full tank of gas as I tested it today.

2) The boat stays on plane at a much lower rpm, this meant higher speeds at lower rpms for my application. This could equal better fuel economy, but I did not check that on this outing.

3) The boat did not lean as bad with just myself while I was on plane. I had my partner get out of the boat so that I could test it. With this being a smaller aluminum bass boat, it will tend to lean significantly to the side with the most weight. The hydrofoil seemed to help greatly with this.

I did not see an increase or a decrease in my top speed. I just got better performance without sacrificing much of anything. Anyhow, I just wanted to post my experience with the hydrofoil on my particular boat. Many of the reviews that I read on here were quite negative about them, and in some applications they may not be a good fit, however, it was a good fit for my particular set up.

I just purchased (used) the same boat but with the standard 25 HP. 19 mph tops! And takes its time gettin there.
Is 19mph normal for this 1999 boat ???
I was thinking about trying a Fin but didn't know if it would do any good. Now that you say it did not change top speed, then I may wait till I can afford a 40 or 50.
thanx for the input

Sorry for the delayed response. 19mph for a 25hp on that boat is probably about right. With the 40hp on my boat, I can get 31mph with it empty and just me in it. Realistically, with two guys over 200lbs, fishing tackle, fuel tank full, and full live well I run 26mph measured with a gps. If this motor ever has major problems, I will probably look for something closer to the max 75hp rating.

The boat itself has been a great fishing boat and I don't see a need in upgrading yet. I use it almost every weekend!

By the way, the Doel-Fin did help me get on plane much faster without the nose rising as high. It may be worth a try if you don't mind drilling the holes in your lower unit to mount it. You could always take it back off and put in bolts to fill the holes.

Thanks for your input. I'm looking to find a 60 hp to fix my speed problem. 75 sounds good but the motor seems to get about 100 pounds heavier.
Also, I did see an advert for a fin that is a "no drill" type. Not sure about sizes yet, however I am sure the cost will be more. The benefit is they come back off without damage....so they claim.
