Re: Does 16:1 ratio sound right for a comando 500 outboard?
Can't answer your question but that is one of the best uses of pvc I have seen in a while, very nice.
The one sticker says a pint to a gallon of gas so I would go with that since it is right on the engine, seems like alot but those older engines really liked the oil.
Re: Does 16:1 ratio sound right for a comando 500 outboard?
Thanks abf. I like to stand sometimes when I fish and the outriggers make it super stable. They are easy to take off for transporting or for a lazy river outing.
I thought that 1/2 pint per gallon was a little much also but I guess Ill carry a couple spark plugs along just in case.
Re: Does 16:1 ratio sound right for a comando 500 outboard?
My 2 aftermarket manuals covering many brands 61-70 all Commandos are 16:1. They use a Tecumseh powerhead.
Manual; covers Commando and the Tecumseh powerhead.Power heads are classed "split crankcase" and "unit block"
You probably know these are air cooled and the leg is not cooled. You can use a good 2 stroke oil or a good TCW3 rated oil.
Re: Does 16:1 ratio sound right for a comando 500 outboard?
Thanks steelespike. I took it out yesterday with 16:1 TCW3 and had a couple extra plugs on hand just in case but didnt need them. The motor ran great all day. I could get 6.5 mph on the gps on the canoe pictured above. I knew it was air cooled when I picked it up. I dont like to worry about impellers and water cooling.
Re: Does 16:1 ratio sound right for a comando 500 outboard?
Hey, just read this and pulled Grandpa's Commando 550 out of the shed! hasn't run in 30 years, but was drained and stored.
Needs re-furb. Where do I start? got a manual? Would love some help. and be able to take my wife and daughter out Scalloping July 1st in the Gulf!
Re: Does 16:1 ratio sound right for a comando 500 outboard?
Rob: you can use TC-W3 oil or chainsaw oil. Is there some mystery involved in the very clear (to me) instructions? They do say exactly: "16:1 with outboard oil".
