How can I check to see if it charges the battery when it's running, is it supposed to?

it should, I am assuming that you are talking about a merc? I had a inline 4cyl on a merc and it charged the batteries

pull the battery cable off while it is running and check the cable for voltage

If you pull the battery cable while it running you'll probably kill the rectifier.

Do not pull the cables off the battery with the engine running. You will burn out the rectifier. The best way to check that your engine is charging the battery is to put an AMP METER in series with the positive battery post and the positive (red) battery cable connected to your engine, start the engine and check the amperage reading. The second best way (though not always reliable) is to take a voltage reading across your battery terminals before you start your engine, then take a voltage reading after you start your engine. The reading with the engine running should be higher and should increase slowly as you increase engine speed.

Sorry, I guess what looks obvious is not always right. I am reluctant to give advise sometimes on this forum for fear I might be giving the wrong advise. This is a good example. I'll try to limit my advise to what i'm sure of.....................Jerry

Jeez....then ya get to spend $200-300 for a new switchbox. Some its possible (NOT advisable), but the Mercs scream money about this point. Stick a cheap Multimeter set at 20 volts on the Pos/Neg Batt cables and run it up on high idle..should raise with RPM increase. Should be 12.6-12.7 sitting...13 plus running
