Does an exhaust bellows with small cut need to be replaced?

I just tore down my 1988 Alpha one outdrive because I noticed that a bellows had a tear in it. Once I got the outdrive off and was able to look at the gimbal bearing, drive bellows and shift cable bellows, everything looked to be in great shape. Now.... by great shape I mean that the hinge pin bolts came out easily with NO corosion, there is no water or foreigh materials inside the drive bellows, the gimball bearing spinns freely with very little play and looks clean with fresh grease (not from me). It looks to me like everything has been replaced recently and they did a really good job. My question is do I absolutly have to replace the exhaust bellows? Because if I do I will have to replace the other two bellows as well. I 've heard that many people only have a tube and not a bellows on the exhaust. Also the tear is about two inches on the bottom part of the bellows and is at the outer-most part of the bellows (towards the outdrive, away from the transom). I've only had this boat for about two months if that matters. Thanks so much for your input.

Dont worry about the exhaust bellows, a tear is not gonna cause any issues. What do you mean by... very little play in the gimble bearing?

No the exhaust bellows is not that important. I have a tube type, it just rests against the drive when it's down, when raised the exhaust can get around the drive. But of course you want not to run the engine with the drive up, that's bad for the u-joints in the drive.

If it was me, I would replace it. Its there for a reason. You have it apart, now is a good time

By the way you described everything, they may have just replaced the drive bellows that was on its way out and the gimbal bearing.

Also inspect the raw water hose that runs from your drive to your engine. If its cracked or old, replace it too.

I should have worded it better. There is no "play" it just spins a bit more freely than the new one that I ordered. Probably just because its new. Thanks for the quick replies. I think I will leave it as is. My wilfe will be happy..... Cant do any laundry with greasy hands!

Leave it be, or buy the exhaust tube instead of the bellows. You do not want to fight with installing the new exhaust bellows.

Agree with above - if ujoint bellows really are in good condition - leave it all alone until next service.

If you have any suspician as to the condition of the ujoint bellows - replace it all, NOW, while you have it apart...
