Re: does any one had close call with jetski while boating?

Let me see...

Getting in the cove im fishing even though there is a big lake outhere.
While in the cove, pass behind me at wot...
While in the cove, pass between me and the shore im fishing, wave while at it...
Changing direction without looking first.
Cutting me off just to show off how fasters he is.
Jumping my wake and landing real close, I mean, real close...
and the winner is...

Taking your new father's day jet ski gift for it's first ride, leave the ramps (no wake) at wot, having the fish cop stop him in from of everyone in the ramp and drop the entire book on him.

Priceless...

Adding:

Circling you repeatedly (against the law) while attempting to stay with schooling fish.....happens all the time. One time it was a kid. Saw her leave the dock (by accident as I was fishing) drive straight out to where we and several other boats were surface school fishing, made about 3 tight loops around us and go straight back to the dock and tie up. Obviously the fish sounded.

Seeing you entering a cove from the point to fish via your trolling motor and making a nice full speed u turn in the cove.....you were going to fish.

I was fishing with my wife one day in an attempt to stay with a school. The person this time was an adult and I shot him the bird. He comes back and asks what I did that for? Figures.

Re: does any one had close call with jetski while boating?

The premise of these PWC's are to go as fast in one direction as possible and then radically change direction (a lot)....exactly the last thing associated with any safe boating. They are not any good or practical (or fun?) for anything other than 'extreme' maneuvers.
Who would get on one of these to cruise?...ski?....travel? Pretty much no one. They are for kids.

....bit harsh maybe...but thats my opinion.

There is a statement some people make..."Opinions are like a*&holes, everybody has one". In this case it surely applies, but maybe phrased a bit differently!!

Our family owns a small Cruiser, a family-sized bowrider, a bassboat, a classic wooden runabout and three jetskis. So, I think I am more than qualified to discuss this topic. I've owned boats for more than 40 years, and PWC's for over 15.

Twenty years ago, I would have agreed that PWC's were mostly owned by kids and mostly driven irresponsibly. It's easy to spew nonsense, but if you were truly a boater that spent any amount of time on the water, you would certainly have realized how the PWC sport has matured. Heck, our last two machines cost over $13,000 each. If you look at the skis cruising down the river past our house you would see that the majority are older people just out for a cruise.

Personally, on a hot sunny Summer day I would rather take out the ski than one of the boats. And, if I'm alone, there is no contest because the ski is easier to load and launch than any of the others. Many of the newer deluxe models are marketed as "Cruisers". Most people we see riding them are grey-haired couples. In our neck of the woods, the launch tramps are no longer conjested with kids cloging things up while they take turns jumping wakes. Cruising is the place to be.

This past summer I had two issues with other boats. In both cases I had the right-of-way and the other guy crossed my bow at a high rate of speed. If I didn't stand down there would have been a collision. Once I was on my jetski, the other time I was trolling in my bass boat. In both cases the other guy was in a 200 thousand dollar offshore powerboat. Ever hear of the "short man syndrome"? You know, the short, fat, bald, RICH guy who thinks he owns the river because he has the money to buy everything else!

That's where the problems lie. It's not the jetskis, its the go-fasts!

sorry, have to disagree with ya,nothing like be anchored out at your favorite fishing hole and getting bites when some dumb a*s on a jet ski trys their best to get as close as they can to you at WOT without hitting you.its ridiculous common courtesy at all. there should be better laws.everytime I go out every jet ski I see are doing everything but driving normal or safely.:)

Courtesy is not so common, no matter where you live. We don't need better laws, we need enforcement of the ones we already have. There ARE laws on the books directed at exactly what you describe. You should take down their numbers and turn them in.

In any event, I'm sorry its like that where you live. That's just not the case around here. Our water cops literally persecute the jetskis, so most often they go off by themselves. The Donzis and Fountains are the ones that don't respect an anchored fisherman. And, the cops don't bother quarter million dollar boats.

On the other hand, maybe the PWCers in my neighborhood are fisherman too, like me!

i try to hit one evert time i go out!!!!
lol. just kidding.
they are a PITA!
evey dav on our lake (okanagan) i see dumb things. jet ski collisions and near miss alike.
in a perfect world, there would be traffic zones on a lake. jet skis in the middle where the waves are. skiiers 100 feet from shore. tubers away from everyone! (they change direction too often to be near anyone.

jet skis are fun to operate radically. jumping wakes is a hoot. however, they gotta stay away from boats. i just shudder to think more people are gonna get killed before we get solid rules about there safe operation. (yes the do need a licence here, but its not enough.

cheers

Re: does any one had close call with jetski while boating?

JimS123 my previous comments were admittedly harsh. Regardless the premise was based on the stereotypical jetski rider...and stereotypes happen for very distinct reasons. I just didn't make it up for nothing better to do.
I would never profess that absolutely everyone in the world who owns and operates a jetski is a fool, again as I stated. However, the majority of jetski operators who are irresponsible are still disturbing high. Much higher than powerboats capable of the same speeds.....and I do mean much higher. I doubt you would disagree.
You may very well be part of the exception to the stereotype and I would hope so.
Regardless, I'll stick with my previous statements until I see the stereotype change.
I'm hoping...

This thread seems to sterotype "teens" as those kind that shouldn't be out on the water. Now, I'm only 21 years old with a 18 ft Charger equiped with a 150hp merc. I've been boating for years and I can tell you right now that you will find people from all generations acting like complete asshats. Myself I drive respectivly and according to no wake zones. I just wanted to say that remember, it's not just teens out there causing trouble. I see adults older than my father(50) that are being pricks, specially in small bays where we stop to swim.

First thing that comes to my mind is that these complaints are almost always by fishermen, it seems they are never happy to have other traffic on "their" lakes. I agree with Kev144, these problems come in all shapes and sizes and I still contend that problems created by a-hole boaters is 10 times greater and more dangerous than the jetskis!!!!!

One time last summer I drove at full throttle into a near collision with one, and that to defend a water skier down in the water that would have been hit had I not made the idiot turn.

Like many of our modern toys, they are a thrill to ride, and can be very dangerous if ridden carelessly.

I love it when some ****** boater goes wide open through the weedbed I'm fishing. It chews up a few baitfish, turns the bass on, and then the fish will fall for the crippled minnow swimbait I offer him.

The trick is to not fall out of the bass boat when the wake hits.

Re: does any one had close call with jetski while boating?

Every season I have close calls with PWC's as well as boats. I'm more afraid of an accident with a boat than a PWC. Sometimes when I'm fishing some PWC rider feels the need to circle around me. I don't encourage this type of behavior since most of the time I'm tossing a heavy musky lure with 100Lb line and razor sharp trebles

Re: does any one had close call with jetski while boating?

I think we all just need to look at the bigger picture. It doesn't matter if the person is 16 or 45 or a PWC or boat. Someone is going to act like an *** and it can be anyone on any type of equipment. Thankfully there are those of us who tend to look out and see these potential hazzards before they create a problem. Where I am, fishing can be a task, whether it's that jet skier doing his "tricks" too close or the boater with a skiier/wakeboard who thinks they own the entire lake. Sometimes I am thankful there are cops or others who look out for these types of people and will go the further mile to go and chat with them about what they are doing wrong.

We can all point fingers at who's to blame, but at the end of the day, I think just informing these people what they need to do could help out in that there are a few less boating fatalities every year.
