Hey guys I am new here and I just traded for this boat the owner said he though it was a Glen-l Geronimo but it does not measure up. The way it is built is different. The title says year built 1956 and under Builder says SPCNS? The original owner (not the one I got it from) said he went from the mainland to Catalina island with it. I would love your help in identifying this boat i dont know what size outboard to mount on it. It is 14"-9' in length and transom height where the engine mounts is 16-1/2in If you guys need more info please let me know

Thanks
Mike B

The general rule of thumb to determine the max HP for a boat is:

Length x Width x 2 - 90 =Max HP

I come out with 115 max hp does that sound right for a 14'' boat. It is all wood. The transom seems real strong, it is about 16 1/2' high where the engine bolts on.

What a neat boat you have there. It definately looks like the last owner was doing some restore on it huh! Did you ask if the boat was set up for mechanical steering or was it tiller steer?

I am not sure you are calculating correctly on your motor size. When you are doing your measurements the width needs to come from the transom not the widest point of the boat. So you would measure from your stern to the bow tip, then measure from port to starboard at the stearn to get your final measurement. Hope this helps, have you made sure that you can get the boat registered for your state?

I don't know if that works.... I have a 76 Chrysler Valant trihull thats 14'x5' so by the formula you gave I should be able to put a 140 hp motor but my hull states 60hp max.:confused:

Using the formula provided in this thread, my 14 x 5 boat comes out to 50 HP max

14 x 5 = 70 x 2 = 140 - 90 = 50 hp

That is also what my hull plate states is max.

Re: Does any one know what boat I just picked up?

So if I go by the formula in the thread I come up with 75hp but if I go with the link for backyardboatbuilders I come up with 40hp because my transom is 16inches high. does that seem right. it is all wood I think with all the controls steering fuel tank ice chest fishing gear skinny wife fat me a 40 would hardly push it on plane.

The measurements are

length 14.75 14foot 9inches
width at transom is 5.50 5feet 6inches
height at center of transom is 16inches

Wishbone the boat is reg in my state already and has hull numbers. the first time I was measuring from the widest part of the boat. The boat was used in the ocean he took it to Catalina island on the weekends. but the person I got it from cant remember what size outboard he had on it.
Thanks guys for all your info

I think a good 50 would do ok but I would like a 60. I know my kids are going to want to tube behind it.

Thanks I like it too. I have been in RC planes for a while I have around 20 but down to 5 know. I traded one ready to fly for that boat. and I traded a gas heli for a 45hp chrysler outboard for my 1948 wizard. runs great. I am working on a rearwin speedster with 108in wingspan on floats.

Man,

One of my strongest wishes is to get a RC Helo, I want to finally be in control, I flew in enough of the big ones when I was in the service, and I am to darn old and crippled up to actually fly a big one, but would die to have one of the RC's!!

Hey MTboatguy check out this website http://www.rcuniverse.com/market/category.cfm?catID=11

Lots for sale. I think the guys in to radio control aircraft are just as awsome as the guys on Iboats.

I will have lots of fun with this boat I am building a cradle on the top for my big float plane so I can strap it down head out to the middle of the lake and fly endless runway.
