Re: Does any one know what boat I just picked up?

One of my strongest wishes is to get a RC Helo, I want to finally be in control, I flew in enough of the big ones when I was in the service, and I am to darn old and crippled up to actually fly a big one, but would die to have one of the RC's!!

Been there done that. Sponsored Heli pilot for 5 years...

So does any one have a heavy wood boat with a 55hp on it and if so how does it do. Here are a few pics of my 1948 Wizard

Wood transoms are not as strong as they look. Most likely, you have several pieces on the interior with a one piece exterior.

My family had a 17' Thompson back in the early 70's. We put an 85 Johnson on it. The first time we "Opened her up" every brass screw in the transom popped. Nothing broke, thank goodness, just all the screws broke.

It was fine after we installed new screws and made a serious reinforcement knee bracket.

I'm just advising you to be careful. Today's 90's are VERY powerful compared to engines of yesteryear.

Cool old bolt.:)

I have a 55 Chrysler on my 14' Trihull and it runs well....I don't think you would have any troubles with a 55

Hey guys I have a chance to trade one of my RCplanes for a 1983 bayliner cobra with a 85hp force says it runs seats need redone. kind of a neat little boat would get her running good then when the other boat is ready use all the goodies for my wooden boat. just think the 85 might be too much but hard to pass up.

I wouldn't. That was a terrible vintage for Bayliners and parts/service are only getting tougher to find for that obsolete Force.

Wizard - your cruiser looks more like a 1960 model Wizard Marlin. Wizard was just getting started in 1948 - as were Fiberglass boats in general. They made a simple little runabout. Their cruisers didn't come about until the late 1950s.

Check out the brochure at Fiberglassics -

That boat looks like it will be a fun project, not something you would see everyday....i like it :). That wizard looks like a nice boat too, can't wait to see how the completion turns out on your new boat.

Thanks cant wait to see her in the lake. man I find 100 hp merc all day long on the craigslist but I think it might be too much.... if the transom holds what are the problems with overpowering. it is all wood and by the time I am done I think it will be heavy with the cuddy cabin and all. Thanks guys
