Does Anyone Know This Merc 5.7 Horsepower???

Hello guys,
Can anyone tell me what the horsepower of this engine is just by looking at the pic? I'm thinking of buying this boat and the owner say's he thinks it's a 280hp. its a 2000 Sea Ray 230 overnighter.

From the tune up specifications in service manual number 24 page 1B-8 It's 260hp.

Ayuh,... 260hp,... 280hp,... What's 20hp between friends...

The 350s have been rated from 230hp to 300hp over the years, depending on the induction used,+ where they measured the hp...
It used to be Crankshaft hp,+ now it's Prop hp...

Whatever hp# assigned to that motor,.. It's a nice Solid platform...

If your friend buys it, better be prepared to do some maintenance. Looks like the oil filter has been on there since 2006, which probably means the gear lube is as old or older, the bellows are probably original, fuel filters, etc, etc.
And the cap for the DTC connector is missing.
But it does look like a very clean boat.

Yes......and if the oil hasn't been changed since 10/05 or 06 AND the drive lube hasn't been changed in the same period.............
I would want to look closely at BOTH. The owners manual indicates changing both at least every year...... I wonder what else the owner has neglected.......


If the boat has been sitting around unused since then and there's water in the drive lube it would probably be right at the bottom drain and visible when the the plug was removed.....

Thanks for pointing out the date on the filter... the owner told me the boat was maintained by the dealer and all the fluids/filters were changed at the end of last season? The dealer selling this boat just imported it to Canada for resale so I?m thinking its a repo. The boat was a fresh water boat and is in new condition with less than 200 hours on it and the out drive is cleaner than the engine.

Well... you'll be getting a professional survey... right?

350 in a Sea Ray: Super common. Well-known... and a surveyor will know their way around it.

Fluids will tell alot.

Listen... about the hours: I'd take a 500 hour boat from a maintenance junkie who puttered around and was kind to all parts over a 200-hour boat never maintained by some water cowboy who could sleep well at night not knowing whether he had water in his oil or water in the drive lube.

You can ruin an engine in 10 minutes.

Let the surveyor do the reporting. Take your emotions out and make this an businessn transaction. You can enjoy the purchase, if it happens, when you are on the water and all actions suggested by the surveyor have been followed and faxed to your insurance company.

Anyone know the specs of this engine? Cam lift and duration, head valve size, head combustion chamber size, compression ratio, piston type, and injector size?
I am fairly new to inboard's but I am a mechanic and have a bunch of experiences with building small and big block Chevys from the old carbed 4 bolts up to the new LS based engines.

Not a fire extinguisher per say. It is a fire bottle and has a head that melts at approx 200 degrees and puts out the fire. Probably the best location for one. It also eliminates the need to lift the engine cover and give the fire a gulp of air just to hit it with a normal extinguisher.

I was surprised to find out these engines have a roller cam. But the cam doesn't have a lot of lift, 0.278 intake and 0.2874 exhaust. Changing to a 1.6 ratio rocker must be a popular upgrade for these engines.

Not generally a good idea to mess with the original spec. Remember this engine is in a boat, not a hot-rod... Boats need nice flat torque curves, not peaky ones... No shiftable gearbox in a boat...

Care needs to be taken on cam lift. There is a thing called reversion that automotive engines never see because they don't have water cooled exhaust. Too much valve overlap, and you end up with water in your cylinders and hydrolocked/ blown up/ rusted up engines.

It's not, and those numbers must be measured at some other point, like at .050 or something. That is NOT the total lift of the camshaft in those engines! It's more like .474/.474 or maybe even .488/.488. .500 is the danger zone for lift and overlap issues on boat engines. Plus that also tends to make their peak horsepower at too high of an RPM to be useable with most outdrives.

See Dennis Moore's Small Block marine performance book as a great baseline to understand how to build a powerful marine small block.

The vortec heads will not take more than .470 lift in stock form.

Given it is an efi, I don't think the merc is reprogramable, before you start to get crazy with mods.
