I have a 1962 40hp Johnson Model Number RDSL-24L I have found that RDSL-24 is the model number for a 1962 Johnson 40hp motor but what does the L after the 24 stand for? Also I was wondering if there should be a stream of water emmiting from the motor when it's in operation the so called "Pee stream" because on my old 28 hp johnson and 25 hp evinrude I have noticed no water being "peed"

The L means longshaft (20"), I believe. On the older motors, there is no pee stream, just a gush of water out of the outlet

Might have been converted to short shaft somewhere down the road...Or, it might just be a factory designation meaning what I don't know...

The L does mean long shaft.Somewhere thru the years someone converted it to a short (15 inch) shaft. This means you can switch it back (if you find the parts)

Well thanks for all the help, I was curious and now I know. I'm sure I'll have plenty more questions over the next while.
