Hi Guys
I have a 1988 Bayliner Capri with a 350 chev / 4 barrel carby along with a Cobra Stern drive. This boat was imported into Australia and stayed in storage for about 6 months and the engine and drive has had only 6 hours use.

Im just going through the process of checking and tuning the engine and so far runs really well, but hasnt been in the water yet, the thing is though Ive come across this wire being blue with a brown stripe that is sitting next to the coil and looks like it needs to be fitted to the positive side of the coil !! But not 100% sure if it does, the current wires that are attached to the positive side of the coil are blue with a black stripe and purple with a red stripe. What is this wire "Blue with a brown stripe for" can anyone assist.

Ive just added a 3rd photo of where the wire goes to, its the big plug beside the carby, but doesnt come out the other side the same color.

Re: Does anyone know where this wire goes

You should have a 16ga purple w/black and a 20ga purple w/red (resistor) wire on the coil + terminal. That is all.
On the - terminal there should be 3 wires two gray 16ga (one goes to the plug for the E.S.A module, the other goes to the 10 pin plug and is used for the tach.) The third wire is the black 16ga that runs over to the distributor.
As for the blue w/tan, it's not even on my diagram, You are gonna have to trace it back.

On most merc I/O's that light blue wire is for the oil pressure sender at the back of the intake manifold if so equiped

Oil pressure wire on that engine does not have a tan stripe on it fellas. Not on my diagram, and not on my motor in the garage. Oil wire is solid blue.

Re: Does anyone know where this wire goes

Well I earthed the wire and nothing happened at the oil guage, now Im really lost, unless I start pulling the wire harness apart to see where it goes, but at the same time everything motor wise is running well so far. And also the oil switch is down near the oil filter not at the rear of the valley cover.

Do I just ignore it at the moment or do I continue the search for what this dreaded wire does:confused:

I would not ignore the oil pressure gauge as this HAS to work.Look at the back of the dash panel and see if that blue wire is connected to anything???

Re: Does anyone know where this wire goes

I've gone over my schematics for several years and different engines and from what I can see they never used that color coded wire. I think someone must have done a little "rewiring" on the boat.

You said that the wire color changes at the plug. Identify the pins on both sides of the plug and tell us what color code exits the plug.

Valid point I will take a look tonight, thank you:D
