I just recently got a boat from a friend who said he didn't want it because he accquired 2 other boats. It's a 1974 Kona outboard recreation/speed boat. i was looking for a manual on parts to order for it, but the fact of it being so old that I can't find anything anywhere on this particular model of boat. It has a 1967 Mercury 95hp 950 SS outboard which is in excellent shape (6cyl). But the rest of the boat is bare. Wiring is good but there is no windshield or seats. Is there a source that I can reach or should I just use the old noodle and fabricate. This is the nicest thing anyone has done off the wall for me and I am excited to get this thing on the water by next season. Any suggestions? Please help in bring the Lemon Shark to life. I gotta lot of fish to catch!

make sure the boats is structurally sound, and safe, before any cosmetics. i have test driven many boats using a milk crate as a seat.

Yeah, Kona's were built in AZ or CA and were one of a number of small "custom" builders who went in and out of business. Even now there are no manuals for boats like these even if they're $100K+. Replacement parts are generic, especially interior stuff. Seats were made in a variety of configurations and were almost always plywood and then custom fit vinyl etc. Where are you? There are a number of shops out here that cater to these boats. In the case of your older OB hull anything you can make or have made will work. Nothing is "stock", there is no such thing on these.

I reckon you have found the best place, as you may have guessed from the welcomes.

There is a marvellous amount of information here, you can spend more time reading than boating!

There are lots of projects in the Boat Restoration section. Delve back into some old ones, not just the last month or so. Many might help you, and answer your questions before you ask. I think there are links to some "classic" boat sites with brochures of old boats, to show what they looked like originally (not necessarily yours, but you can get a feel for the period).

Read the basics in the Engine FAQ section, specially if the merc has not been run recently, and don't start it without water muffs, or the lower unit in a bin of water. The 'awakening' and 'winterizing' posts are essential reading.

I see you have already found the Merc forum. Some great help and knowledge there.

Good luck

p.s. When you ask questions on restoration, post pictures, we all love pictures!

Thank you for all the support and sorry I haven't replied recently. I have been using the old noodle though. I redid all of the wiring and I used some old indoor/outdoor carpet I got from work when they refirbished the offices here at work. Nothing like FREE. Of course I used the old wood theory and made a cross panel to mount the front seats. Then I fixed all of the old dash switches. Replaced the bow and stern lights and the bildge pump. Like you guys are saying, when a company goes out of business 30 yrs ago, time to just think and fabricate. But I am no mechanic and I have a beautiful 95hp 950 SS Merc on the back (1967 German) and the guy who gave it to me swears that you choke it once and you're good for the day. Boat sat for 2 yrs so what should I look for before firing up this puppy? Carbs, fuel lines, points and condenser, plugs and wires, tail shaft oil? And should I have a reputibal dealer perform this and what do you think is reasonable cost for this type of tune up? I will post progression pics next post:)

For those of you that said you wanted to see some pictures of my Kona restoration, here is a few. Please let me know if I am violating any of the posting rules since I am just new in this forum. Well, she took a few weekends to do this, but I think she's coming right along. I will keep these going to you guys and those of you that have any suggetions on who to contact about old boats and repairs, keep the threads comin' ! By the way, for that semi-gloss black restoration look, I found that Krylon Barbecue Black touch up paint is the bomb for touching up boat trailer frames, engines that are older, like mine, car trim, etc... It is 1200 degree resistant also so it is perfect for that resto!
