Bought this on ebay for 99p the other day from a guy across town from me.It looks like it'll probably run with a new floatbowl gasket as it's chucking fuel out at the moment from it. It's aircooled with no impeller at all and looks like a lawnmower motor under the cowl. It's not a B&S. Anyone recognise it? I have no idea apart from it says MEP 3.3 (guess this is the HP) cast into the leg-and the s/n doesn't give any clues.

In some ways it resembles a Mac 10 that I own. But mine has a Sachs Wankel powerhead and a larger lower end. It was made in Italy. But I know of no other models that they made.

You might be right there Willy, I've just come in from looking at it and there's some writing on the leg in italian. It now runs quite happily-but its chucking fuel out of every orifice before the block.

Interesting-looking. It's a traditional piston engine, I assume?

Sounds like the carburetor is defunct, and I'll bet you won't find any parts. Time to measure the mounting for the carburetor and search for one that will fit...perhaps from a lawnmower or moped. As long as the venturi diameter is about the same size, you may do just fine, with a little minor engineering work.

Yeah it's a traditional piston engine-looks like a direct transplant from a 2-stroke cylinder mower turned through 90 degrees.. I'll probably end up cutting the carb flange off the manifold and tig welding a B&S or Flymo one on along with the carb. It'll make a handy low-maintenance kicker-or an anchor!

If it's truly an Italian outboard, you might want to check the breakers for carbs for one or another of the Italian mopeds. It might bolt right up to the flange...in fact I'd bet on it.

Do you see any markings on the engine? Any indication of its origin? I love mysteries.

In any case, it would be fun to get the thing running properly, for amusement, if for no other reason. And for 99p, you can't lose, I'd venture to say.

Most excellent. Mac used the Sachs wankel engine in their 10 hp. But...it was an Italian company, and may have used one of the ever-present Morelli or Motomorini engines in the smaller ones. I can't find any info.

I'd still check the breakers for a carburetor. They'd have some with Sachs engines, too, I'm sure. I'd take the carburetor with me and see if I couldn't find a match.

Enjoy!

lol cheers myoutboards! I'll strip the carb and see if it's salvageable first. The shipping to the UK might be a bit much tho :)

Yikes! That doesn't look like the same engine at all, although it could be the same under the hood. Sounds like this MAC company was just rebranding stuff and putting different covers.

Let us know how your quest goes. In any case, it shouldn't be hard to find a replacement carb if the existing one won't rebuild. Pretty much any lawnmower carb should be adaptable with a bit of fiddling and engineering.
