Ok, the other starter bolt broke off but this time it was the, "no-way Jose') one. Took the engine up, got underneath it, carefully took out piece of bolt. Down went engine, Grade 8 bolts on starter, everything hooked up, etc. Muffs on, water on slowly, and now it's leaking out of lower shift cable of outdrive.. Mercruiser 1988 4.3 v6 death of me boat! I'm just a girl who wants to boat and fish!! Thank you, Janis

If you mean coming into the boat from the shift cable end then the water inlet O ring is dis-lodged or missing filling up the shift cable cavity

1988 means Alpha One, which means it could also be the upper shift Shaft Seal. Possibly hasn't had the upgraded seal put in...

Either way, you need to pull the drive...

Thank you. It's coming out of the outdrive and not in boat. Is there anyway to get around buying the spline wrench? Also what seals do I need to order?? Thank youi, Janis

Now I have no idea where the water is leaking.... can you post a pic?
