Does it matter what Throttle Control and cables I get for a Mercury 50 HP outboard

I am going to purchase a 1986 Mercury 50 HP outboard from a guy who has had it in his basement for 25 years, He said the motor ran once for about 6 hours and then was put away because he got rid of the boat. He doesn't have throttle controls for it anymore. How do i find out which ones will work for this motor? Do any Mercury controllers work that i find on Ebay or Craigslist? Any help would be great, this is all new to me.

Depends. If you get a GenII controller, you will need to get GenII cables. BTW, Ijust installed a GenII controller for my 2006 Mercury 90 and it is way smoother than a gen1

This is a binnacle mount. You may need a different style mount.

Check with Mercury on what can be used with your motor.
