Does my 25 XD charge the battery?

How can I tell if my 25 XD has charging capabilities? It would be nice if it did a little battery charging. It is hooked up to electric start on the engine controls on the side of the console. Thanks

Most electric start Mercs have a charging circut. There should be a rectifier on the starter side of the motor near the switchbox. It will have two yellow wires and a red wire on three post terms and is about 1 in. square and 3/4 in. thick. The recitifier is very touchy when it comes to running the motor with any battrey connection bad or faulty and should never be run without a battrey unless the yellow wires are disconected and insulated. Best bet is to get a Mercury manual for the motor as it has all the info for testing the charging system, and is a cheap investment, if you plan on keeping the motor.

Yes, it does have a charging circuit.
Ditto on the above.
Keep in mind, it doesn't charge much....... Mainly just maintaining a charge. YOu'll be able to see a slight increase in voltage if you put your meter on the battery and then change the motor from slow to fast idle.

Thanks! I have a Seloc manual but it is kind of hard to wade through at times. One thing I don't like about it is where it shows the names of parts in a diagram but when it tells you how to do the job they use other terms-- like when it tells how to rebuild a carburetor it refers to the "high speed jet" but there isn't anything in the diagram called a high speed jet. One diagram has a main fuel jet and a back drag jet? It's like they are giving instructions to somebody who knows what they are talking about and probably doesn't need instructions anyway.

Thanks Oldman 570 I found the rectifier-mine is down lower. I thought mine was round at first but that turned out to be the starter solenoid. I will be sure and check with a meter at the battery, to see if it is working- rectifiers cost close to $50 now.
