I would like to find out if my 1968 20 hp twin with the red band SN# 2436396 has coils or the other type of ignition. I can't tell without taking off the flywheel which I'd rather not do of course. Thanks a lot. Bob

Hi Bob,
Yes, your motor has coils. It operates with a traditional style magneto ignition consisting of two sets of coils, points and condensers. All other later ignition styles had the main coils mounted exterior to the flywheel.
The coils on those 1960s Mercs generally age quite well, but the condensers do not. Condensers are still available, as are points and coils if needed. Unless the points are severely burned or otherwise worn, they can usually be dressed with some 320-400 grit sandpaper and then cleaned with laquer thinner and compressed air. Gap the points at .018".

- Scott
