does my motor have an emergancy shut-off???

yesterday I went to the lake with my friend. Before we left, my friend had toppped up my second gas tank for my boat for me, while I ran an errand. We had a good time, and eventually ran out of gas on the first tank. Since I was currently behind the wheel when we ran out, my friend went to the back to change tanks. The engine started right up, and ran fine for about 3 minutes. then I noticed that we slowed down just slightly, and 30 secsonds later the engine just died. After trying to determine the problem, I discovered that my friend had not added oil to the tank after he filled it, and I never thought to ask him if he did. That meant that basically I was running the tank at 250-1 (or so). I added the oil, and turned the key, it started up, but would not idle fast, and I could not shift it into gear without it stalling. I started it up again and let it run for a good 5-10 minutes, eventualy the RPM,S picked up a little and I could shift it into gear and go home. It did not rev. very high however, but it was getting dark and I was afraid to turn the engine off in case I couldn't get it started again. Eventually we reached the ramp, and I decided to take another look under the bonnet. This is when I discovered that the spark plug wire on the bottom cylinder had come out of the coil,(a problem that I thought I had fixed, but I guess I didn't). Anyway, I twisted the plug wire back in the coil, started her up, and took it out for a quick burn. She ran fine.

I apologize for the long post, and thank you for reading. These are my questions.......

#1.) Does my motor (1977 70hp evinrude) have some sort of detecter that could tell that the fuel was too lean and shut the engine down???

#2.) It was ran for a max. of 5 minutes at WOT with the leaned out fuel mixture. In your opinion (the reader) did I do any damage to my engine??

#3.) What would you recomend using to hold that damn sparkplug wire into the coil...it used to come out all the time, till I siliconed it. THat lasted a little while, but what would be permanent??????

thanx again

p.s. iboats.com is great and I appreciate all the experts that come on here to help the newbies such as myself. If your ever in the neighborhood I'll buy you a beer ;)

You might want to check the compression to see if you did any damage. Sounds like the plug wire coming loose may have saved your Bacon.

Good luck

Thanx..I was planning on doing a compression check anyway, and I have already bought a new head gasket.........I need to get it out on the water again and make sure that it still goes the same speed as it used to at WOT.

Sprouticus> I will try to answer from what I have learned reading on this website.

I AM NOT AN OUTBOARD MECHANIC>>>NOR DO I PLAY ONE ON TV!

#1-NOPE,

#2-YES, the real question is how much damage>>>do the compression check before running the boat on the water>>>If one, or more cylinders are down, it could ruin the engine to run it hard if the rings/cylinder are scored.

#3-If this is the pin type coil (High tension wire pushes onto a pin) check the pin to see if its bent over instead of penitrating the wire core. If it is, straighten the pin first.
I would cut the end of the wire & refit to the coil pin.

GOOD LUCK

thanx for the reply.i guess I havn't had a close look at the coil because usually the repairs are made while I am leaning out over the back of the boat in the middle of the lake  I will make sure to do that tommorrow.

ok.....i just did a compression check and it came out as 120, 118, 118. so I think I might have gotten lucky.....It is a pin type coil , but the plug wire won't stay on........I'm going to try silicon again it think.

somebody please reasure me that my numbers on the compression check are ok...... :(

thanx for reading

Comp. is OK>>>
Have you tried cutting off a little bit of the plug wire before attaching it to the coil??? A fresh bit of wire at the connection, pushed on tight should hold. Use a pair of plyers to install and give a slight twist while pushing the wire into the coil>>>Make sure its seated all the way.
Good luck

Re: does my motor have an emergancy shut-off???

yes I tried that......tried it so many times I only have about 3 inches of wire left......lol....I just used a super strong type of loctite that I bought for a previous problem on it.will let you know if it works cause I'm about to take the boat out again.

ok..the loctite didn't work...........I am going to try a glue gun next :) If that doesn't work I am out of ideas.

I've used small cable ties on spark plug boots with good results.

Re: does my motor have an emergancy shut-off???

i have no problem with the boot end.the problem is the wire will not stay in the coil................i'm thinking about changing the coil anyway...I did a test yesterday, and even though I did have spark..I don't think it was strong enough (couldn't jump that 7/16th gap)
