Hiya guys
I'm new on here and sort of new to boating.I have recently brought a new to me mercury 75hp 2stroke outboard.Power trim, electric start.I want to know if it is or has the potential to charge the battery while its running or do I need to take the battery up stairs every time to charge it?I can't find the serial number on any sites to get an idea of its age but it runs great on my Glaston (serial number is 9436226)
Thanks for any help

If the voltage at the battery while the motor is running is above 13V then it's charging, it should climb to 14V+ at higher RPMs.

Yes your motor has a stator that will charge the battery if the rectifier is good but you have to test voltage as said above while running with a multi-meter at the battery if you don't have a voltage gauge on the dash.

One more post and you can upload pics after the third post. I ran the serial you gave and it didn't come back, is it a US motor?

Generally, the charging systems of older outboards can't make up for much more load than :

Starting (about 15 min or so to replace that power)
Operating the tilt/trim some
Running lights while the engine is on
Some intermittant operation of a live well aerator.

Not a lot of power at all...

Its a good idea to have additional charging from solar or other sources (plug it into a charger at the house if the boat is kept in the garage or driveway on a trailer) Especially if you run a trolling motor for fishing.

Ok, yeah the serial does fit into the Belgium made Merc 75 in a 4 cyl model. (9436226) I see it as a 1975 model year. Looks like the switch box has been replaced with a new revision model.

I don't like the butt splice seen going into the harness. These old Mercs have a problem with wiring going bad and some people take short cuts replacing wire. The poorly made ground strap is suspect too. Find anything wiring related that doesn't look right and either replace it correctly or pop on a new wiring harness.

Post a pic of the other side too with the coils. I checked on the stator and it provides 9 amps like most of the Mercs of that era. Plenty of juice to keep a battery charged if you're not doing a lot of cranking to get her fired up.
