Does Speed Kill?

I am the happy owner of a 24'walkaround CC with twin 1995 Johnny 150's. At WOT and spinning around 5800-6000 turns it moves along nicely at 48-52 Mph. My question is does running at this speed for extended periods harm the engines?

I live in Florida off the Gulf of Mexico and it's often calm and a 20-30 mile sprint is not out of the question. Is this OK?

Re: Does Speed Kill?

Unlike automobile engines, outboards are designed to run steadily at high RPM's. That said, I've always backed off on the throttle a bit after getting up to speed. The engine seems happier and I think it will last longer.

Take your boat up to speed, then just back off a bit. Your engines will last longer.

I don't think your motors will have too much trouble with the WOT operation, however you will get MUCH better gas mileage if you back off 5mph.

Thank guys.

I usually dont run them WIDE open for more than a few minutes but 5000-5300 is realistic.
