Do you get any smoke from a well-tuned 2-stroke running 50:! on full synthetic oil?

yes you will almost always get smoke from a 2 stroke unless it is one of the newer direct injected ones that are super efficient. Does the smoke worry you?

With Synthetics, it will smoke (if it burns, it smokes) however it should be diminished in the amount of visible smoke you should see.

Re: Does synthetic smoke?

Well my 1976 70hp Johnson that runs on premix has virtually no smoke except during a cold start. I wouldn't say none because it is the nature of 2-strokes because the oil/fuel mix is burned in the combustion chanber unless direct injected like was mentioned. Same story for my dad's 1991 60hp Johnson with VRO, and my 1997 oil injected Mariner 115 hp. All of these engines are in good tune and have been running synthetic for the last couple years (Except the Mariner which I just got this year.). Prior to that my 1976 Johnson ran wal-mart Super-tech 2-stroke oil. I don't remember it smoking even then. My BIL's 150 Merc smokes like crazy and he is looking into the adjustment of the oil injection.

My 2004 Yamaha 90 has never had anything in it but full synthetic and I never see any smoke.:)

Re: Does synthetic smoke?

what 50 motor do you have?
Just a general question. I know many synthetic makers claim no smoke & was wondering if it's true. I've run Pennzoil full synth in a 24:1 antique and it reduced the smoke so much I could actually use the motor and not be embarrassed. :D

Related question:
Burning end-of-season premix in my truck or mower won't smoke any more than the outboard, right?

I've ran mixed fuel through my lawnmower and saw no smoke at all. I couldn't even tell the difference.

Re: Does synthetic smoke?

It always smokes less than dino oil when the ratios are the same. Whether you can see the synthetic smoke is about the ratio. Heavy ratios of synthetic will smoke just like normal ratios of dino oil. Today's engines have lean ratios so neither smoke like they used.

If your mixing it at the same ratio as dino oil its not necessary that may be where smoke is coming from, check bottle and see ratio necessary or ask dealer.
