JB's point is good, it's not a ban. Stevieray, "the market" can still weed out transfats if "it" so desires...if it's really that important, customers will be attracted to restaurants that announce "NO TRANSFATS" and the others will go outta business.

What about all those hot dog venders? Can ya make a good street vendor hot dog without transfats?

My suggestion for regulation was for disclosure, like JB said. That might fuel the "no transfats" advertising & allow informed choices to be made by consumers.

Re: Does the govt have the right.....

Trans fats are cheap liquid fats that have hydrogen gas introduced to them under pressure. This make them "partially hydrogenated". They do this to make less expensive oils solid at room temp. This is a palatablility factor. There are other oils which can be used that work as well, they just cost a bit more.

The problem with Trans fats is that you metabolism doesn't process them very well. It creats very his LDL levels.

I'm not real keen on the idea of banning them but I do think restaurants should have to post if they use them in their food preparation.

Wendy's, KFC and others in in the process of eliminating these oils in their fryers and prep just out of pressure from the public and health advocates.

Let the market decide this issue.

This is a New York City ordinance,........
Not a New York State Law......

And,.......
As far as the Money Trail,.......
It's the Restaurants that are using the Cheaper frying Oils, with the Trans-Fats, rather than Better(aka. Cleaner, Safer) Oils........

And,..........
I Agree that the Government has Little or No Business Regulating what I Eat, or Do, that Doesn't effect Other People.........
Aka., Seatbelt laws, Helmet laws, Smoking laws, Eating laws.........
And the Biggy,..... Anti-Gun Laws...............

I agree with all of that except the smoking laws part. Only smokers think that smoking doesnt affect others.

I think, as others have stated, that full disclosure of what they are using would be better.....leave the choice up to the consumer. Or just as good, allow the business to make the choice. Culvers (Burger/Custard Place) here has said they are coluntarily stopping the use of the stuff in their restaurants.

Aside from all that, foods cooked in trans fats just taste better. You can't properly fry chicken in Wesson oil, it takes Crisco.

I am not in sync with the Libertarian view that the market will straighten everything out on its own. However, this is a good example of how they think stuff like this should work, and in this example it did . . .

Although I don't think we're ready for a law (ordinance) like this, I wouldn't have a problem with it. Bottom line is trans fats=cardiovascular disease. Who do you think flips the bill for all the preventable medical care provided as a result of people eating too much of this stuff? The middle class of course, just like everything else. Medicaid, disability, unemployment. Do you know how much a bad heart attack costs? Million bucks out the door MSRP, the actual payout is substatially less. Most of Mcdonalds customers don't have that kind of money. Healthcare doesn't live in a vacuum, somebody has to pay for that. Whether it's taxes, increased health insurance premiums (whether your an employer or employee) it doesn't matter, it's money right out of your pocket. And for what? I guess I won't go there, but you get the point.

I don't have a solution to my concern with this stuff. But my "bottom line" is how do we really know this? And if we really do, why do we reverse our "bottom line" so often? Inquiring minds want to know.

The anecdotal evidence alone should be enough for even the most hardened skeptic. It's like asking to prove smoking causes lung problems. It's hard to prove, but everyone knows it does. I guess I should keep my mouth closed on this issue. Too many unpopular opinions on the matter.

Re: Does the govt have the right.....

The reason that the government is doing this is because it cost so much to treat the people that are affected by poor diets. The fed and state governments are paying the health care costs for millions and millions of people. It makes sence to me to try to keep the people healthy.

No need to keep your mouth closed DR. We all learn by discussion and especially by differing opinions. With that said, there are lots of examples of complete reversals of things that "everybody knows". Just one of my hot buttons these days because of the business I'm in. Even a reversal of a reversal is probable in my little view of the world . . .

Ok, Jtex, why not let the gov't ban your cell phone since studies have shown it causes cancer?

Oh no we can't do that, I use my cell phone!!

Uh huh, where is it gonna end?

Cars and cigs kill more people than trans fats, so if the gov't really cared about is they'd ban those immediately.
