Does the shaft spin if you spin the prop by hand?

Hey guys, we had our lower unit repaired last week (skeg welded on) on a 125 hp Force 1989 http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=300502 . When I removed the LU from the motor, I could spin the prop by hand and the shaft that goes into the motor turned. I got the LU back from the shop on Friday and noticed that when I spun the prop, the shaft did not move. The prop spun with less effort this time around also. I did not take it into the water yet to try the motor. Is this normal? What do you think?

The "dog" gear must be in neutral. that is why you can spin the prop while the shaft coupling is not moving.

dog gear - is that the pin that is sticking up from the LU and connects to the horizontal pin on the Motor? (By the way - how does that small pin work?)

The mechanism you are describing is what controls the dog gear which is located in the LU gear assembly. The small pin is likely a hinge pin for the gear shifter assembly, I could be wrong without seeing it though.

It must be it. The post I attached in my message has 2 pictures. The picture on the right shows 2 silver spindles sticking up from the LU. The one on the left is the one that spins the prop and the one on the right is the one that controls the transmission. I think that is how it works. Am I right. Do i need not worry.

The forward shaft is your shifter shaft. It has three position. Up, down and neutral which is in the middle of the other two. You need to check the rigging on this when you put the lower back on. The books give a good step by step on how to do it.

Depending where the shift lever is, the large shaft, your drive shaft, may or may not turn.

You have nothing to worry about. Try to have someone help you when you install the lower. They weight about 50-60 pounds.

I had no one to help me so had to do it my self. Its a pain in the back but i got it in. Had to raise the pivot shaft a 1/4" with pliers to get it to line up with the part from the motor. It moved very easily so I figured it was normal that I had to raise it.

Sounds like you got it up correctly. They are heavy.
