It looks like an old Hayes equalizer that the eye has ripped out of. If you were turning the trailer just before stopping that would account for one spring being higher than the other and your tires do seem to be tilted like that.

Dexter axle offers replacement equalizers for a nominal price. Check your favorite parts dealer. If you don't have one then Redneck Trailer Supplies can get you fixed up.

If its not on level ground or the front of the trailer is higher thats normal.
Mine has the same type setup and does that all the time.
Nice new tires...:D

That is normal if the trailer is not level. Level out the trailer and send us another picture.

Re: does this look right?

And even if the trailer is level, you just got done jacking the axles up to replace the tires. So it all has not returned to where it all would be going down the road.
I think External is right also. Look at the center pivot point, it is no longer in the center of the equalizer. The rubber bushing inside has broken down and the bolt is to the outer limits of that bushing now.
Replace the equalizer and the bolt too as it is most likely worn there too.
Check your spring eyes too for bushings while doing this work before your trip for parts.

well we took the boat out to the lake tonight and it didn't move. even with the boat off the trailer. I even tried moving it with a pry bar and i moved it down about and 1/2 inch then it snapped back up again

Well, if that is the case, it is a different story. There was another member who had that happen last spring, right after having a welding shop install new springs. The shop had misjudged the shackle distance, and put them too close together, binding everything. How long has it been doing this?

Also, was the trailer level when you pried on it? If not, all you were doing is fighting gravity, and even with a pry bar, that is not fun.

Someone at some point may have installed new springs.
Those springs might be a tad too long.

Re: does this look right?

Is one shackle up and one down? They should both be the same way.

When the trailer was unloaded were there any tires lifted off the ground?

If the shackles are not the same i used a floor jack to crank the incorrect shackle back in place. The whole unit should look like a "W" when in proper position.
