Not having valves it is a common occurrence for two cycle engine s to start running backwards. Apparently the ELTO was designed to take advantage of this and yes, it does run backwards instead of having a reverse gear.

My Dad had a mercury 70hp back in the 60's. The control had a button on top that was the starter button. pull it forward and start for forward and pull it back and start for reverse. I think they nicknamed them "dock busters" cause sometimes they didn't start right away and you hit the dock.

Yes, the old battery ignition Knucklebuster Eltos will start and run backwards if you learn the technique. I learned that the hard way years back when I started a 1928 Elto Speedster with the timing not quite right and it backed into the dock, bending up the prop.

Here is my 1928 Elto Quad, running last fall. Fun motors! They start with a quick flip of the flywheel knob and away you go!
