put 50 gallons in my 27 foot boat with a 460 omc. cruised at about 3200 rpms 30mph. went about 75miles till i ran out of gas. about 1 1/2 miles a gallon crusing. dont know if thats normal but damn expensive. anyway the next day i put 35 gallons in and went about 25 miles however didnt even plane out. just basically cruised at about 5mph 2000 rpm. I feel like i used more gas going slow then i did going faster. does that sound right. is it because i didnt plane out that i used more gas. i mean we were running for much longer the second day going so slow it took us about 4 hours to get 25 miles. im not sure what i should get and whats the best way to get it. Im paying 4 bucks a gallon and its killing me.

you're pushing a lot of boat the first day you ran 2 1/2 hours at 3200 rpms on 50 gallons. the second day you ran 4 hours at 2000 rpm did you run out of gas. i think a t 3200 yuo would be lugging the engine thus burning gas and not getting opitum performance.

There is WOT or top speed and crusing speed. Typically crusing speed is the most efficient all things considered. That big 460 is suckin gas fast or slow. Even in a road boat (car) these things were about the worst for gas milage ever produced. Our 28 footer used to get about 1 mile to the gallon. Consider wind, chop, load, proper tune of engine, prop, etc. a best case senerio you might get two mpg. Do some searches or find a manual to learn your crusing speed. This should identify an RPM and speed for optimum performance, provided all the aforementioned items are at their best too. Why do you think so many people with big boats just like to sit at the dock :/

It sounds close to me... but if you are at dead idle, you may be best

milage, anything more than the slowest speed is a lot more work due to the boat not being on plane... once the boat is on plane, get the drives up a little, the tabs as far up as possible and the throttle as slow as practical to keep it on plane but maintining the best possible speed. very slight differences in the throttle make a big difference in teetering on the edge of plane and making good headway.

At the current price of fuel a fuel flow meter at 200 to 300 dollars is well worth the money to find the REAL best speed and RPM :)

And not run out of gas because you will know how much you have really burned

Hey...I feel for ya (a little bit) I've got a 35 footer with 2 of those 460's in it, I'm not sure of the mileage (but it's not great). I swear it's got garden hose sized fuel lines. I've always felt I run the best around 3200-3300 just before the secondary gas suckers open up!

Yep on the secondaries! Half the reason I tossed the QJet in the garbage, and did a Edelbrock 600CFM with the spreadbore adapter......under 3300 like a two barrel, WOT opens the garden hose...... I putt at 1700
