Does waxing your bottom really help?

I had used some cleaner which really cleaned up the calsium deposits on the hull. It is now nice and clean ( and repaired).

My question is; since I leave my boat on a lift all summer, and so far had little issue in getting the hull clean, what will waxing help with? The disposits will still stick to the hull, and won't the wax wear off in a short time anyways?

Perhaps waxing is more to reduce the lines along the water line, which has always come off for me with with little effort.

Ive never waxed my bottom, I guess I would have to shave it first.

Waxing the hull of my boat empericaly seems ot help, I can't quantify it but it seems faster on plane and does clean up easier...trailered.

Do a search on wax and you will find that wax actually will slow a boat. It is a friction thing. There are some coatings you can use that will repell the grime but they are costly.

Just a clean hull on the lift should work.

For racing sailboats (40+') we wet sand the bottom and never used wax after, as it produces more drag than a clean bottom.

Surface tension....wax creates it, sanding removes it.....
To keep Marine growth from sticking hard, you need to use an anti-fouling bottom paint for best results.

I think it would help at a water park. The management might insist you wore trunks tho.

Thanks Bob_VT, I thought waxing would reduce drag, but very little.

And yes, I thought that was a catchy title to get responces :D

So, I have one for waxing, one against, being the lazy one the Boss says I am, I'll skip the waxing. And I will clean the hull when it is on the lift ( NOT!) I may try something to keep the engine clean. Funny, you don't notice how white the engine is untill I get it home in the fall!

It helps release the deposits easier, if done routinely. As far as getting on plane faster, I have not felt it did. But resistance is lessened.

My observations are empirical, in fact it SEEMS my truck runs better when clean, and the tank is full, I seem to be smarter and quicker witted after a shower etc etc...could be I just feel better about things when they look good.

I don't use wax on my bottom. I do, however, spend alot of time getting it out of a sling.

Can you guys actually notice a decrease in speed/longer amount of time needed to get onto plan when your hull is waxed? I mean, I can understand with professional racing sailboats where every knot matters, but your run-of-the-mill runabout, you can tell with that?

Sean

Re: Does waxing your bottom really help?

To add to the question, would it make a difference whether the hull is aluminum or glass? I now have an aluminum Spectrum and have been curious if wax would make a difference?
