Doesn't make sense, any ideas?

I had an older bow rider with an OMC 5 liter HO with SS 19 prop, the boat weighed 2900 lbs dry. It cruised at 28 and topped out at 47. I bought a new (to me) boat this year similar style bow rider. It has a 5.0Gi Volvo-Penta. The boat weighs 400lbs more is ten inches wider and 6 inches longer.

When I bought the new boat the marina they told me the performance would be similar. The new boat has a deeper V and more weight. It would give me a better ride but probably less top end.

To my surprise and to my wife?s displeasure, the crusing speed of the new boat is 40mph and top speed is 59mph.

All speeds checked with GPS.

I am not complaining?.but how is this possible?

Could just be hull design.

Some hulls are faster than others.

Have you checked these numbers against the manufacture's website? I don't think the cruising speed is really 40mph, that seems too fast. Once the boat planes out, you should be able to trim it and cut back on the throttle a bit and it will stay on plane; that is your cruising speed. Does the new boat have a duo-prop? That will make a difference as well. "...to my wife's displeasure..." Did you test drive the boat first? With a GPS?

The new engine is probably more powerful. Like the other poster said, it could just be a hull design. To many variables to say for sure why it?s faster.

My mistake, I was referring to "cruising speed" at mid throttle 3100 +/-, the boat planes well around 20MPH 2100 RPM

The manufacturer states WOT 4800-5000.

It is a single SS Stiletto prop.

I did not test drive the boat however I did have it inspected. Manufacture?s warranty on hull, stringers and transom is 50 years so it was more condition of drive system.
