My wife and I want to buy an inflatable to use while we are looking for a small cruiser. We would like to take our Golden Retreiver out with us for a putt around the harbor .

I know about PFD's, and overheating and plenty of water but was wondering if her nails could puncture the Hyparlon tubes.

Also any comments or suggestions or any other issues we should be aware of from someone who has done this?

Many thanks

Tony

Tony,

I have a golden and she gets real excited near water. All she wants to do is jump in. In my case its fine cuz I just let her and she will swim around for an hour or two but, she wants in and out every 10 minutes. Sharp claws, dog doubles in weight, gets to be a pain after a short while.

I would recommend you leave the pooch at home until you get a boat that can handle the three of you. You will enjoy the trip far better without her and she will learn that a boat ride is a good thing and not another outside cage that moves.

Nothing my dog loves more than a boat ride, and a couple hours of swimming.

Doug

I have a Golden too! They are such Super dogs and they really love the water!

Hyparlon is very strong, but to be safe your dog's nails should be clipped.

There is no way your dog will puncture those tubes. Take her/him along, you don't need to worry about it.

Re: Dog in Inflatable. Ok?

I had a Golden/Chow mix, she loved the water and to swim also, but would NOT jump into the water from the boat, she wouldn't hesitate to jump in from shore though or even off a dock, but not from the boat. I tried to see if she would by throwing all her toys in the lake and having everyone get in the lake and call her, for 30 minutes she just looked at us and cried. That really made me feel MUCH better about her in the open bow while underway, I knew that she would stay in the boat. Cause at 30+mph, if she did jump off, there is NO WAY I could shut the motor down fast enough or turn fast enough to keep from hitting her with the prop.

Just a thought, but if your's doesn't have a problem jumping in the lake from the boat, I would teach her that it is NOT a good thing.

Craig

I say take the dog, but clipping the nails is good precaution. If the boat's hypalon, it's a quality boat and you needn't worry.......

your call, the boat will be fine but will the dog behave? if so, have a great time. if not, wait for a better boat for the pooch.

If nothing else, get a pair of dog booties. They have them not only for wilderness walking, but also water type ones so that those nails do not dig in.

i was just about to recommend the booties. They are cool. They also have to wear in the house, if its muddy outside. What will they think of next?

Re: Dog in Inflatable. Ok?

Took my dive buddy's dog (yellow lab) out with us when we went for a dive. No problem at all with nails and the tubes. Hypalon's pretty tough stuff.

Riley wore a PFD, and his Mom stayed in the boat while we went for a dive.

I will say one thing: getting a dog back in an inflatable is not as easy as it sounds. Riley took interest in a sea otter, at lest until he hit the water. Pretty funny.

Be prepared for a somewhat seasick dog, though; it happens.

jky
