Re: Dog Vet Bills!

I think Pit bulls,Rotwilers and Doberman Pincher's got a bad rap. Its not so much the dog but the person who has them. But you do have to watch there dog breed habits.

American Pitbull Terriers are the only breed on earth that was bred to show no aggression to humans, they don't make the top ten
police reports list for frequent bites , and 80% are mixed bred - eroniously classified! They were called the childrens nurse mates in world war 2!

This is Goon: he is a 160.8lb 100% American Pitbull Terrier. He is a magnificent dog - fearless, loving, and with a heart of gold. He likes cats, dogs - anything friendly. He eats turkey, and eukanuba every day - some times twice, two grilled chicken breast 5, nights a week, 4, cans of tuna each week , milk when he asks for it, about 6, eggs a month, and half
of whatever I make for myself if he wants it - it is an honor to care for him!

Awesome Dog...BTW, love the name! AND yes, I agree with one of the posters...Pitbulls get a bad rap...we had one here in Colorado bite a 9 y.o. girl, they put it down this past week. Not sure of all the details, but the news likes to report when a pitbull bites, not the other dogs. I work on an ambulance and FD, we see dog bites from all breeds and it's usually situational, not the specific breed. There's only like .001% difference in the DNA between dogs and wolfs, which is why they can inter breed. Those, I'm scared of as their instincts are different.

The most we ever spent our dog in the 13yrs was $3000. That was for cataract surgery. The cost of the hotel and the 12hr drive to get there was over and above. A week later we had to go back for a follow up visit. The surgery was a success, but unfortunately both retinas detached, putting the dog back into complete blindness. He took a little bit, but learned his way around the house and yard. Also learned my parents house and yard. To watch him you would not believe he was completely blind. He lived a healthy 4 yrs after he went blind.

Thanks. He was a great dog. That photo and this one was his last trip out on the pontoon by that time he could hardly see or hear so he didn't have as much fun as he use to. He was a great water dog. We were standing on a dock at a little pond and I pointed down at the Sunfish in the water by the dock and said "Get'em Black Dog" and if he didn't just jump off the dock 4 ft. right in the water and was swimming around sticking his head underwater trying to get them. LOL It was the funniest thing, I never thought he'd just jump right off like that.

Re: Dog Vet Bills!

Back to the subject of spending money on our "pets" this next photo should make it perfectly clear where I stand on anything that I or my wife has decided to take in and care for. This was my Collared Lizard that had calcified eggs inside of her that she wasn't able to pass on her own. A few more days and she would have died. As you might be able to tell from the photo.....yes, she's laying on the operating table, O2 being fed to her and that's a pulse monitor clicked to the base of her tail. I almost passed out on this operation, was worried to death that she'd die on the table during the Op. She recovered from it and lived another year.
So.......yes, I will do anything that I can for any animal that's at my house.

The impetus of my thread is to see what the average cost of ROUTINE care for dogs are, so I can make a determination
as to whether or not I can afford to get another dog if Goon should pass before me. It is not to place a value on his life.
I am also trying to accertain whether or not my vet is screwing me. The thread digressed as often they do because that
is human nature - indivisuals respond to other replies, which depart from the crux! There is almost nothing I would'nt do for Goon short of going to hell! There is no monetary value placed on him - he is family, the only one that is pure at heart!

My apology Socey, none of my posts were meant to be directed towards you at all.
Vet bills range from anywhere from 35.00 to 75.00 per visit, it just depends on what you have done. Do you have other available Vets in the area? If you feel like your current Vet is changing too much, try a different a place. If there isn't another place, then that probably adds to the higher cost, because the Vet kinda has the corner on the market in their area.

No problem River_Lizard. :) It is my fault not nipping it in the bud - the thread went off point, and remained in flux throughout. I was pleased with all the response, I tried to assimilate the pertinent info but I was moved by the kindred spirits like yourself who place
friendship over money.
This area is replete with vets: the last one I used lost my dog Clamp - never to be seen again! I am a faithful type -
the vet I have been going to since Goon was 10 weeks old did help save his life. He is almost 7, now. They were refered to me by my brother. I drive over 20, miles to get there - each way. I don't know what I should do. This is a high price area.

One old dog with problems. Put to sleep because of a brain tumor, young dog that needed xrays and an MRI that indicated a required spinal surgery. May have spent close to 10K last year.

Socey,

My wife and I have had to change Vets several times while we've lived in Richmond; some of it had to do with cost for services and 1 had to do with not feeling that the Vet was concerned enough on the well being of our animal. The Vet we use now offers us a discount for having multi-pets; it's 15-30% depending on procedure (office visit is 15%... other treatments 30%)

You no there are so many ignorant people; they believe what they here on tv. The pitbull has been demonised ever since the war on drugs started. When I take him out, most people give me a real dirty look - like I'm the biggest awhole in the world for having such a formidible beast - including the vets. I wish there was a vet that specialized in treating the American Pitbull Terrior. I'm tired of trying to ingratiate him to morons. The last time I was at the vet another doctor I haven't ever seen came out and grabbed Goons leash about a foot from his neck while I was holding it - so a little pug could walk by - a pug Goon had just been playing with. Goon crawled on his nees to the little thing so he wouldn't scare him. She ( doctor ) said you never know what might happen. A game bred dog will not show aggresion towards a small dog. The American Pitbull Terrior is a true American- if someone dosn't like them, they are either ignorant, anti American, or both. The inter city dwellers gave this exceptional breed a bad name - not the breed itself.
I'm going to take your advise and try to find another vet - how do you vet a vet? I live right outside of DC - our nations crapitol. All my moms family are from VA -Danville. She was born in Lynchsburg. My grandmothers sister lives in Richmond.

How much do we spend? Don't want to know. They are part of the family, so, whatever it takes.

If I thought it was a problem, I suspect I'd be told that my opinion doesn't count.

You are really asking a question that only you can answer. The amount that vets now charge never ceases to amaze me. Vets charges seem to have gone from reasonable to astronomical. I am on medicare and pay more in medical costs for the dogs than myself. Are the vets ripping you and me off? Probably, but what is the alternative? If you can't pay at least several hundred to a thousand dollars a year for checkups, flea and tick treatment, and heart worm pills, don't get another pet.

A couple of years ago my tax guy mentioned that his clients that were Vets were doing better, income-wise, than those who were physicians. Medicare and insurance companies probably have something to do with that.

I wish It was $1,000 a year. My dog had trouble peeing - they gave him some pills - $800.00

Re: Dog Vet Bills!

Just got an eight week old Golden Retriever puppy on Thursday.

Just took him to Petsmart to get his 2nd deworming. By the time they got done examing him the bill was about $150. Then we looked into their plan. For $39 plus $32 per month he is covered for almost everything including neutering for the 1st year. I ended up only paying $72 today and then $32 is automatically charged to my card each month. I know it would have cost me another $150 in three weeks for his last round of shots so the plan seemed like a very reasonable deal for the 1st year. Not sure if I will stay on the adult plan after the 1st year is over or not.

The Vet I was going to locally for the last two dogs was pretty expensive, but he was a caring Dr and I liked going there. Going to see how this goes with the Petmart plan for a year and then decide whether to go back with the Vet or not.
