Hi Guys,

How do I determine if my dogs and gears need replacing? I am having a problem my 50 hp Force outboard. It feels like it jumps out of gear and then back in. it does it quite often at very slow speeds and as I go faster it happens less and less. When this happens it is only for a split second and then everything is fine again.

Anyway, I decided to disassemble the lower unit open and have a look. I got the gears out and the dogs and mating gear pieces do not look that bad. They are rounded, but just barely. There is definately no sharp edge.

I took some pictures. You can go to the web address below to see them. Click the image to see all six pictures. Click the individual images to see a blowup.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: Dog wear

Did you try adjusting the cable before taking the lower apart? I agree, the dogs don't look bad enough to be the problem.

You say it feels like it jumps in and out of gear. A spun hub on a propeller will feel like the same thing.

With your hub disassembled, you can't test the prop. When you get it assembled, scribe a mark on the inner and outer hub at the back. Operate the boat and see if the line moves. If it does, you have a spun hub.

Re: Dog wear

Hi John,

Thanks for the reply. I am not sure what you mean by "adjust the cable. Maybe you can give me a little guidance on that. I am very mechanicaly inclined, but I have almost no experience on boat motors. I have done a lot of car and motorcycle engine rebuilds.

I will get a new lower unit seal kit and put the unit back together (next week). Then I will try the spun prop trick you mentioned. Any info on that cable adjust would be appreciated.

I didn't really mind taking the lower end apart because I wanted to see how it worked anyway. It was very simple to disassemble. I might not be saying the same thing getting it back together..lol.

Thanks again.

I meant that you need to check the adjustment of the cable to the engine connection and then check the shift rod adjustment. If the cable isn't adjusted properly, it doesn't matter if the shift rod is, the dogs will still not engage properly.

The adjustment procedure for the engine is in the Clymer manual on Page 471 and 472. The cable adjustment is in Chapter 12 of the same manual.

Re: Dog wear

sweet... I have the service manual, but I can not find the shift linkage adjustment in there. I understand what you mean and that will be my next course of action. Thank you so much for your help. I greatly appreciate it.
