30 lb is more than enough for dorados...I've pulled some nice 50 lb plus tunnies outta the Pacific on 30...Good reel, smooth drag and angler skill factor in a little...Plus the fact that dorados put on a heck of a show for the first few minutes but tire fairly easy...

You'd be amazed at how hard you can pull on good 30 lb test...

hi there GEO where are you putting your boat in blackpoint or biscayne park?, you know where is elliot key south of elliot key if you look on a nautical map you going to see ceasar creek, is the outlet to the ocean if you go south straigh east from ceasar creek you going to find a tower in front of you around 60-120 feet keep goin probably 1 mile or 2 from the tower you going to see the drop on the dephtfinder 450-800 feet always have the tower as reference, look for birds ans seagrass, I use ballyhoo as bait.

Thanks for the info!..

I've gone out black pointe with no luck. Which one would be closer? I kinda know where Elliot key is but had trouble getting to it because of low tide and I was not familiar with the area and the gps did not want to guide me because of it...

I am going out early this coming saturday and am hoping for good fish finally...

Alot of good information. I am a proffesional angler from south Florida (Keys). On my boat I usually put lines in around 200 feet or on a good color change. Don't forget to look for birds, preferably friget. We have seen fish in the high 50's cuaght in 250 feet. The Gulf Stream moves around if you have a temp guage on your depth finder you will see a couple degree swing. You will also notice your SOG (speed over ground) will change if you are heading east and west. Gulf stream travels to the east.

You may notice you are traveling 8-10 knots East and 2-4 when going West.

We ussualy trol bait at about 8 knots for Mahi with a better bait Quick rig.
If your looking for Tuna use a feather and trol alittle faster.

You will probably see some sails or marlin they will suck up some live bait, just remember you have to drop back to them. They will hit the bait and return so don't be so quick to pull the bait away.

Good luck and thight lines

The Gulf Stream, I believe, is a current of warm water (warmer than the inshore water) that exits the Gulf of Mexico, wraps around the Keys and travels up the east coast. Because of its warmth and depth it is very blue water. Most pelagic (open ocean) species are found there.

Mahi mahi are pelagic. I don't think I ever saw or caught one that was not in blue water. Most of those I have caught were taking refuge from the sun under some sort of floating material. They wait there in ambush for any passing bait. Their favorites seems to be flying fish and ballyhoo, but I have caught a lot on pilchards.

The Gulf Stream, where I fished it off Ft. Lauderdale, travels anywhere from 3 to 6 knots, so be prepared to come in several miles north of where you went out.

look for the weedline right outside haulover inlet. Tons of mahi, kings and jacks.

Some coordinates to get you in the right area:
N 25? 54.562'
W 080? 05.397'
