Boomer and Keith, you guys say coupler. I'll obviously try the coupler first as it will be right there when I drop the drive. What do I lok for to see if the coupler is bad?

Holy Sh*t! new coupler $275.00 Is this a "pull the engine" repair? or can I get at it through the int housing?

You need drive work, not a coupler, and yes you have to pull the engine to change a coupler.<br /><br />Welcome to the wonderful world of boat$$$$$$$$$$.

I only said coupler based on your description of it 'slipping like a weak clutch. Not 'jumping' in and out of gear. If in fact it is slipping'jumping in and out of gear, I'd say it is in the outdrive. I also questioned your ability to turn the engine over, while in gear, by rotating the prop.

OK then, I'll start with the drive. Lower end first. I still dont get how I can spin the drive straight through though.

Thanks Keith. I have bought a few parts from them as I'm about 35 minutes from Worcester. Good site for diagrams etc. I get most of my parts from Monahans Marine in Weymouth. <br /><br />Boomer and Keith, you guys seem to be the best at these drives, and I appreciate all your help. When you say it is in the drive, are you also thinking clutch dog? or something else? I know it's impossible without seeing what it's doing, but I would imagine that not too many things could cause the same problem. Don S. seems to think clutch dog all the way. (BTW, how do I tell if it's bad, never seen one before), and do I need to replace all the gears with it? Thanks gents.-Jeff

I found a close up pic of the clutch dog, and I would imagine if it is worn, the edges round out, causing it to slip. Theres only three edges on the 400 one (If I have the right one pictured, bottom right in pic #22633). My next question is can I get to the clutch dog from the prop opening? I'm not rebuilding the entire lower unit, so if I pull the prop, I should be able to pull the snap rings, plate etc. R&R the clutch dog, check the gears, replace if necessary and reaasemble the whole thing. Seems easy from that point of view. Thoughts? Am I missing something, or is my being hopeful clouding reality.......<br /><br />Thanks-Jeff

if the dog is bad the fwd gear will be as well. the sharp edges will be rounded. its also possible the shift cradle is worn as well. to replace the fwd gear and pinion assy is fairly easy for the average do it yourselfer with some time a a service manual if you will study the manuaal several times before attempting any repairs and do the job correctly without chintzing with pennies. if the gear is worn its worn and no amount of new clutch will fix it. about the only special tools that are mandatory are the driveshaft holder, the pinion shim gauge and the snap ring pliers to remove the prop shaft. the rest can be obtained from basic hand tools. the drive shaft can be shimmed at a dealer and then you can take all the parts back home. myself I no longer work on any stringer units and I am close to shutting off cobra units. parts are getting to tough to find at a reasonaable cost and in a reasonable time frame and most the stuff in the salt pond has to many corrosion issues.

Thanks Rod, I have snap ring pliers, and appreciate the straight forward about the gears. I'd like to keep the boat for a while, and don't want to do any repair twice because of being cheap. I also have a dealer that could shim it for me. <br /><br /><br />1. Can I get there from the prop opening? My manual does not give specifics to R&R a clutch dog. This way I could tilt the motor, get where I need to get, trailer the boat to shim the drive shaft and then pick it up.<br /><br />2. Since the manual is not in front of me, the shaft holder is used when shimming, correct?<br /><br />3. Is there a manual you suggest?
