The "microprocessor controlled" schumacher chargers at walmart have an automatic desulfation mode. They don't mention it anywhere on the box - but if you pop one open it is in the manual...

B&D Smart Charger #VEC1095ABD Has 25/10/2 amp charge +75 amp start + desulfate mode. Think I paid around $40 bucks for mine as well. I agree it's a great charger for the money.

I am going to see if I can find one of these at lunch time.

B&D wants 137.00 and Amazon wants 69.99. After reading about it, it seems like a great charger. I am just wondering where I can pick this up locally. Time to research.

In my opinion, these are a waste of time and money for boating applications. They might be fine for a trailer brake battery, but not for any application where you need real charging (as opposed to just a top-off trickle charge). And I quote, "Not a Baattery charger. Conditions and maintains batteries after they have been charged". (I have to wonder about the quality of a company when they cannot spell battery.) Also, they cost more that the battery charger he was looking at and he still would need a good battery charger.

In my opinion, these are a waste of time and money for boating applications. They might be fine for a trailer brake battery, but not for any application where you need real charging (as opposed to just a top-off trickle charge). And I quote, "Not a Baattery charger. I have to agree with TerryMSU on this one. Need real power at the push of a button so to speak. But thanks for the information!

I am also looking into one of those one's from Walmart, Shay and I are a bit strapped for cash and are having to do things and buy items when we can. maybe time to look on Craigslist for one.

Yikes! Guess I was a lil off on the price? Sorry, my bad. A great charger still.

Dunno if this means much but Vector Mfg in Ft. Lauderdale actually builds/imports(?) that particular model for B&D.

That is OK, prices always differ from place to place depending on market and what not.

That is a great charger though!

Like I said we will have to see what the money is like. Right now we have 62.00 dollars in our budget. He does chores around the house and works odd jobs throughout the neighborhood to make a bit of cash when he can.

I am hoping that we will have the "Shae" in the water by the fall of this year, but we will see.

The question was about desulfating a battery not charging one. I gave real life experience about their usefullness. Extended battery life 6 times period. I still run charging circuits on the trailers. This is a fleet of 45 small (less than 10,000 lb trailers) the test was documented and the units are now in use company wide.

I am running one on my boat, it is not a charger or maintainer it keeps the plates from sulfating. I am only 3 years into its use on my small boat but will report on it's usefullness at the end of the batteries life.

Just to clarify, this is not a stage in the charging cycle, but rather an additional function. For example, my charger can charge AGM Batteries, Gel Cells, Wet Cells, and one or two others. By hitting a specific button, it switches to a desulfate mode, as opposed to a charging mode. Maybe some other chargers automatically go into desulfate mode, but I am a wee bit skeptical.

What I would do is buy a hand held jumper battery and always take it boating with you, most are AGM quality and will crank your engine if your battery is dead. You already have a charger like the one I have. I always charge with 2 amp up to 12v and don't let boil. Don't use tap water in any battery, you want deminealized water. If the battery is cranking the engine use it, keep it charged and have fun. When I need a new battery for one of my vehicles I sometimes swap the battery from boat to vehicle. I like to keep the newer battery for boat. Hope I saved you some money.

Ya an 'automatic' deslfate mode whilst charging sounds a lil far fetched. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

On the B&D chargers it is a seperate mode. According to the instructions included w/mine yer sposed to leave it in this mode for at least 24hrs. And can repeat it for a total of 5 times. If the battery doesn't show signs of life after that it's probly time for the last rites ...

Like I said earlier, get a new battery. Trying to resurrect a 5 yr old deep cycle makes no sense to me, the charger you're looking at is $60+, the battery worth about $90 new. Any decent charger with charge limit capability will keep your NEW battery healthy for many years. Why screw with this old battery? You haven't saved a dime and it WILL leave you stranded in the very near future. Not worth it safety wise or peace of mind.

Guess for me personally, resuccitating a 'dead' battery equates to rejuvination or resurrection. Redemption if you will.

And cheapness ... If there's the slightest chance I kin kick that sulfate into submission I'm goin for it!
