I have a 1966 100 Horse Johnson outboard. v4tl-14 The motor starts well but when I give it some gas it stops running like right now, like it had a kill switch. This doesn't happen all the time. Could use some ideas.Mark

check the primer bulb to make sure it is getting gas. It should be hard.
If no tthat, it sounds like an electrical problem. Maybe a short somewhere. Check for worn wires around moving parts.

Mark, Does that motor have a distributor with two sets of points? If so, check the wire that connects the points, and the wire that connects the condenser. There may be a spot where the insulation was rubbed off by the disy pully, and when you move the dissy when accelerating, it shorts the spark out.

those do have a moveable dist so I agree it sounds like something shorting out. You also have to sync the dist linkage and dist with the carb. It is not hard to do, but you need to follow all the steps in the manual one by one.
