dont know what year of my out board

i bought a boat and someone put a 85 Johnson javilin on it boat is a 90 but motor seems much older how can i tell the year so i can get a manual for wiring the boat has a key switch and so does the control box is that why tach and fuel gauge don't work?

The model number should be on a 1" X 3" metal plate attached to the port transom bracket.

Failing that, look for a nickel-sized, convex welch plug on the top of the engine block with the numbers.

Once you have the numbers, check back here.

Yes, Jumper. you are correct. It is a 1977.

Yes, 1977. That's the last year in that particular series for the V4 85HP and 115HP. They were built from 1973 - 1977.

Use 87 or 89 US Octane gasoline with TC-W3 oil, Hi Vis gear oil. I had best luck using QL77JC4 Champion plugs and synthetic TC-W3.

See if there is any movement of the tachometer when you turn the ignition key to the run position. You may have a bad rectifier; check it according to this thread by Mr. Joe Reeves: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=190638

thanks for all your help found out that gauges are still wired to boat but not to motor will fix that later i turned on the ignition switch on boat dash not control box has seprate key and fuel gauge worked was that engine set up for a temp guage dont have one on boat would like to have one on it took it out to lake today and found another problem i think it has a bad prop it seems to be cavitateing water when i plane out and turn hard right or left it looses power but moter sounds like it speeds up am i corect in my thinking and could i get a stainless prop for that engine and where would i find one so many to choose from on line
