I have 1960 LeeCraft on the forth I was towing the family skiing at the end of the day was the first time for the need of reverse I have selectric gear****. the red rev. button will not stay down but it still goes in reverse,( I did it 2 more times and you can hear the reverse trying to go in but it does and maybe its my imagination but it seemed the reverse wasnt as strong as always) both forward and neutral work fine. is the problem in the motor lowereunit or the gearbox? A couple of times while pulling them there was a shimmy vibration as I shoved it then maybe 2 sec of that and then it works itself out and runs wide open is that 2 different things. thanks

Nobody can tell you where the trouble is without some diagnostic testing. But I can tell you that the push button switch is suspect. Especially since they always were a tad on the troublesome side. Yes, if the switch is on its way out, it will cause partial or no engagement of the clutch. As I said, testing is called for.

BTW, what motor are we talking about here? Evinrude used the Selectric name for BOTH electric shift and Hydro-Electric shift. Two totally different systems.

Good Catch F_R. I just about assumed electric shift:embarassed:

To the OP

What condition is the gear oil and is it the correct oil? The shimmy thing... could be an ignition miss, or a fuel supply issue.

That motor left the factory with a Hydro-Electric shift unit.----The gear oil should not have metal particles in it , none at all !!-----First determine the condition of your lower unit !!

the motor has run with the gear oil with metal in it for 17 years . Also when I put it in gear with hose it goes into rev even thought the rev button does not stay down , but when I put it in lake with back pressure it is going into gear but not moveing the boat . does that still mean go towards the switch the boat does 40mph in forward. it was working fine until the 4th when I pulled my family skiing
