Noob noob noob question: I just got an older 1981 Evinrude 35HP (has the words "Thirty-Five" on the cowell sticker.)
So I see other videos of the seemingly same outboard, and the water stream from the water pump blows out the left side under the cowell. Well I KNOW it's supposed to blow a jet of water out just like my Merc motor does, but this one doesn't. I'm looking at a very poor quality schematic from Evinrude Johnson, and I can't determine where it's supposed to fly out of. I wanted to see if it might just be plugged before I pull the lower. Here are my model & serial numbers right off the motor's metal tag. Any pics or video links would be a plus!
MODEL No: E35ELECIG (That's an 'i' like iPad.)
SERIAL No: E0002710
and I just wanted to say THANKS in advance!

Waterpump is not working or the hose and fittings are plugged.

The tell tale outlet is on the starboard side towards the back of the lower cowl. The hose comes from the top of the powerhead down to that fitting. If the motor is new to you, replace the impeller. It is cheap insurance.

Agree. But worth running a piece of weed whacker line up the little hole -- easily clogged.

Whenever in doubt about water flow, check the running temp on the top of the head (surface temp) -- motor is overheating if too hot to touch. If you have an infrared tester, temp should be in the 120 - 140F range (temp of incoming water makes some difference). 160F or over is too hot.

Ah ha... I think I found it! Is it called a "nipple" on the parts page? Or maybe that nipple holds the tube in place? Looking at it now I can see where it is!!! Thanks a bunch guys.
One further question: Can I get away with just replacing the impeller? When I drop the lower gear case are there any seals I'll need to put in order to put it and the water pump back together? I'm thinking you guys are going to suggest I get the complete water pump kit?
Once again boys, THANK YOU for your wisdom. I really appreciate it!

NEW DEVELOPMENT! Hey, I went out before work this morning and ran some weed whacker string up my pee hole... (What am I supposed to call that hole? Pee hole just sounds so... well... WRONG!) Anyways, I digress... and lo' and behold, it was PLUGGED UP! So I pulled the whole hose off and cleared the jam. Wondering if that was all that was wrong, I replaced the hose and fired it up but... no luck. Looks like I'm going to need a new impeller or kit.
But kudos to oldboat1 for suggesting wee whacker string, and to the rest of you guys for your infinite wisdom! I'm new here but I think I'm gunna love it!
Thanks again all!

Usually an impeller is all that's needed, but you won't know for certain until you take it apart. There aren't any seals or gaskets that need to be replaced when you change the impeller, but since the lower unit will be off it is a good time to reseal it if there is any question about leakage.

Was there water spraying from the idle relief when the engine was running? You pulled the hose off to clean it, did you also ensure the fitting on the block was clear?

Yes, I believe so. Those are the two little holes in the back, correct? A bit of exhaust comes out there as well. Why did you ask that???
I Blew through the block part where the hose went and it DID let me blow air through; No obstructions. It that good or bad?
Thanks again everyone!

Sounds good. I've always had good success manually flushing the powerhead with the lower unit removed -- that is, push some water up the tube and let it circulate around and out. That helps insure the cooling system is going to work when the impeller is doing its job. (I've used a small pump or a garden hose, stepped down to accommodate the smaller water tube. The male end of a quick release might work for you, connected to the water tube with some fuel hose or whatever you come up with in the right diameter.)
