Don't often get stumped, but I am... Evinrude Lark IV 40hp

A friend of mine dropped off his old Powercat to have me get his twin 1962 Evinrude 40s going. Mags have been rebuilt, lower units resealed, new impellers installed, carbs rebuilt with new ethanol resistant kits, etc.

Port side motor starts easily and seems to run well on both cylinders. Pumps lots of water, too!

Starboard side motor - not so much. Starts VERY hard. Runs on one cylinder and also overheats.

One cylinder issue: So far, I have checked for spark - good on both cylinders... Checked compression, about 95 psi in both holes. I do know it is the bottom cylinder with the issue. Almost suspect the bottom main seal leaking so that it runs lean. Grasping at straws at this point.

Overheating issue: The pump is actually pumping - I pulled the cap off the top of the cylinder head and pulled the thermostat, started the motor and water gushed out the top of the head. For some reason the water just doesn't seem to be circulating. I suspect a blockage somewhere - not sure if I should pull the exhaust cover or try pulling the powerhead off the mid. I did pull the cylinder head and the coolant passages I could see were spotless in both the block and the head.

Very frustrated with the beastie at this point... I'm thinking I'll have to pull the powerhead to see if there's any old impeller bits blocking up the works, and also to see if the lower main seal is intact.

Was the ball-thingy, spring and housing intact under the thermostat cover?

If you feel like punishing yourself, try looking at the inner exhaust cover to see if there is a hole in it and letting exhaust pressure into the cooling system. Long shot, but.....

Look for garbage in the cavity behind the core plug just above the accordian-hose exhaust relief.

UPDATE:

Finally got back into this motor. Solved the overheating issue over the weekend - I pulled the exhaust cover - nothing. I pulled the head cover - found the outlet hole at the bottom of the cylinder head was plugged with crud. Looked like reddish epoxy - about the same color as the paint they use to coat the inner surface of the castings. This explains why it was pumping out the top of the head, but not circulating through...

Still gotta get after the one-cylinder thing. I had the powerhead off the mid while I was chasing the overheating issue and checked the bottom main seal while I was at it - it was fine. Will pull the carb and check the reeds this weekend...

I'm guessing that you checked compression? Maybe got a head gasket leak?

How do you know that the lower seal was good? Looks can be decieving. When I'm out fishing, I look like I know what I'm doing.:D

what do the spark plugs look like? wet, dry?
Might be a timing issue or a coil.
Exhaust plugged?

Cylinder getting air and gas, compresses, sparks then exhausts. repeat

Please note i'm no expert on gas engine's but diesel is my game.. Just don't know why they didn't make the Evinrude's 8hp a diesel. For the love of God, WHY??!

I checked the lower seal when I had the powerhead off. This motor has a spring-retained carbon seal and it is easy to remove it and check it...

Compression is good - 105psi in both holes. No water on the plugs. Can't remember what the plugs looked like at this point as I haven't run it since I first worked on it back in August. Exhaust is clear - checked when I had the powerhead and exhaust cover off last weekend.

Ignition is all new and timed, although I am going to revisit it today to make sure I don't have a wire loose or rubbing to short.

Plug wires have been my issue lately on a couple of motors.

Got it sorted out late yesterday. Not 100% sure what the issue was, but I've got it running on both cylinders now! I did a combination of things while I had the flywheel off - cleaned points, replaced condensers and redid the laminate spacing as one coil was rubbing the flywheel. I'd been getting spark with the starter spinning it, but it wouldn't spark in the bottom if I spun the flywheel by hand, so one side was a little weaker than the other. Spark now jumps 3/8-gap on both when spun by hand and she fires on both cylinders! I can finally put this one to bed! Thanks all!
