Don't slow down!

This happens every time I go out fishing, a boat is going by on plane, they see me and decide to be ''nice" and slow down and for the next 5 minutes I get to enjoy their monster wake as they plow through the water, I would much rather have the 6'' wake they were making on plane as opposed to the 3' one they throw when they slow down.

The one that got me the most was a guy in a bass boat with a 225, he went from 65 to 10 as he went past me and of coarse his wake went from unnoticeable to a tidal wave.

Next time you run your boat look back when you are on plane and look at your wake, now slow way down and look at your wake, you aren't doing anyone any favors.

I grew up on a river and always hated when people did that when I was out in a canoe, it just makes it so much worse.

Sorry, long standing pet peeve.

I will continue to slow down, Of course my toon does not create a wake when I slow down. I hear you though, I don't think most people realize how much larger the wake is when they are not on plane. If they want to reduce the wake for you they need to drop to idle speed not plowing speed.

Re: Don't slow down!

I make it a habit to slow down for folks fishing, I slow to no wake speed and I do it well before I ever reach the fisherman, so he can just sit and fish. I have always tried to be considerate because I hate to sit and fish and fight off a big wake. I always preach to whoever is driving my boat, NO WAKE near any boat fishing.

Best advice I ever got, bow high = big wake, bow low = little wake, idle speed = minimal wake

Guilty as charged your honor.

Last year was my first year boating on a lake with a lot of fisherman. Took me about 2/3 the season to figure out what you are saying is absolutely true. I generally try to give as wide a berth as conditions allow any way.

One of my favorite quotes applies here. "The road to h*ll is paved with good intentions."

Thanks for the reminder.

It's not really an issue here because nobody slows down for anyone....ever.

A rule of thumb I use is, slow down when the boat that I don't wish to wake is 45 degrees or more ahead and don't speed up until it's about 20 degrees forward of the beam. Our wakes travel forward and outward.

Alternatively making a broad alteration of course away from the other vessel works well if you have the sea room.

I give the anglers the respect in the appropriate areas. If they are next to a speed/ski zone on a busy day, too bad. If they are in a no wake zone or by a speed/ski zone on a not so busy day, then I idle. Anything more than an idle for me creates a wake that draws in the jet fleas.

Re: Don't slow down!

The rule is your wash (wake) should not disturb the other boat. Up on Lake George (where I'm anchored in a cove as I'm typing this) we get to enjoy the down staters (and the Jerseyites) who like to see how close they can get to you as they fly by you throwing off a huge wake especially while you are sitting there trying to fish . . . when you wave them away from you, they just give you the finger!

I always figure that they are not trying really trying to insult me, they are just holding up their IQ :D

Hearts are in the right place , just not their brains ..:D

You have to slow down ENOUGH , so that you do not throw the rollers and defeat the purpose of slowing down .

My 12' tinny with the 9.9 will easily throw a 2' wake @ half throttle .
@ full throttle it barely throw a 3" wake .

Slowing down soon enough is the key , then IDLE past , and put it back on plane when you are clear of your fellow boater .

If time does not permit this , keep your speed and course so that you do not generate a tsunami .

Of course there will always be the clueless and the intentionally stupid boaters to contend with ,but that's life .

Just because others are ignorant or stupid , does not mean that you should be . Set an example . Be the standard . Anything else is just adding to the stupidity ..

Same here . This morning we had a Carnival cruise ship, a 300 some odd foot freighter from Iberia and a Navy Frigate cut right through the middle of us fishing. They made no attempt steel clear or slow down. Threw a 5-6? wake as they passed. Made me spill some of my coffee.

Someone really needs to educate them about the your wash (wake) should not disturb the other boat rule. :D

same thing happens when people half-way honor no wake zones

Sorry, long standing pet peeve.

The vast majority of my boating time takes place on the Middle River in Fort Lauderdale. ALL of this is "no wake", due to manatees.

I believe in this rule. There is no reason to destroy an animal simply because I want to touch 35 mph in my boat.

At the same time, I have to say that it is ridiculous that the "No Wake" zones go this far west, and they are in force even in the summer time. I've seen Manatees upwards of 16 feet long grazing the crud from my seawall in February, and have seen them in the canals up to a mile away on many occasions during the months of December, January, and February. Other than those three months of the year, manatees never come back into our neighborhood.

-Why should this section of the canals be "no wake" other than those three months?

Re: Don't slow down!

Growing up on a lake I have to agree with SSMayfloat if a person is in the main basin of a lake I don't slow down, I do however give them a wide berth. If a person is in a channel between lakes I'll slow down to idle speed. And yes I have noticed the people who think that they can blast up to you slow down to idle and speed back up when their past and don't realize their wake goes not only sideways but forward.
Would I like to shoot a flare into some boats? YES Do I, alas, no but thinking about it makes me feel good

Me too. I hate it when I'm fishing or just floating and some jerk blows by me on plane. It's rude. I'd like to throw an anchor around their neck.

I think the above 2 quotes say it all. I've been yelled at for both cases, staying on plane and coming off plane for them. No way to keep them all happy. I slow down to "no wake" speed for people fishing in out-of-the-way areas. If they want to fish in the main traffic channels and bayous, I figure they enjoy the wake, and stay on plane as far away from them as possible. Still get the "one-finger" wave from lots of them who I guess would rather have the big wake from coming off plane.

I've seen people trying to fish sitting in the middle of a 5 mile long main channel (stream is about 50 feet wide) to the lake, which is NOT a "no wake" zone, with a steady stream of boats (2 or 3 a minute) passing them in both directions. Looks like they spend all their time screaming at other boats! Seems pretty selfish that they figure everyone else should have to accomodate them.

Yea I hear ya. If they choose to fish in the middle of the stream there isn't much you can do except stay on plane or slow down way before you get to them. It's the guys that come within 100 ft of me that make me so angry. They have the whole lake yet they choose to buzz me. Jet ski's are the worst and rudest of all the boaters. When they are buzzing I usually go back to shore and let them have the lake. Most of the time I fish a 200 acre lake so it's not like they have to come that close. They just choose to do so. I guess you can't keep everybody happy. Also weekends are the worst. It's brings out all the boozers and partyers. I guess I'm just an old fart that likes the lake smooth and quiet. Just because I have the horses doesn't mean I have to run them wide open all the time.

What you say here is all so true . . . I always slow down to practically no wake UNLESS they are fishing in the channel, then I wish I owned a bigger boat that would throw off a huge wake :D

Unless, of course if it's a freighter or an oil tanker . . . I tend to give them their own way in the channel :)

Even some of those Oil tankers pilots could care less if they see pleasure boats on the Hudson, which is only a few hundred feet wide in some places they go full speed purposely and throw off a 5 foot wake

Hahahahaha, I thought I was the only one that bought my flare gun for DEFENSE :D

But alas, even pointing it at someone going by can get you arrested. Just make sure there are no other witness's around :)

I was thinking of wearing two flare guns hanging off those criss crossed holsters on my chest like a Mexican Bandito . . .

Let's see how close the jet skiers come to me then :D
