I have a 40hp 2 stroke merc on tracker pan fish 16 with a quicksilver SS 9x14 prop,and will do 32mph with two people, I do not have a tach,but data plate on engine says max rpm 5500. I'm just worried aboat over reving ,want advise from more experenced boaters. (Man she's a handful on rough water.) Thanks for any comment.

you need a tach to start....so you can see what your engine is spinning..

There are a couple of easy to install aftermarket tachs.Tinytach is one.What year motor.
Is it a big foot?
You also need a tach to be sure your not lugging the motor,too low rpm.
with a 14" pitch I would suspect lugging.

IT's an 02 model 2 clyinder. I dunno, maybe just me, jumps out of hole like "RAT NOW" but seem's like to fast on top end,could be cause it's a stick steer and just feels fast. At any rate I don't hold her at WOT very long,quess I could invest in a tach to stop my worring. Thank's for your comeback's.

Until you install a tachometer you will never know what rpm the engine is turning. That's a very simple fact. Sort of like not knowing what your speed is if you don't have a speedometer in your car.

A tach will stop your worrying and tell you what you need to do to be setup right.
If the motor over revs it could lead to a premature death.If it is lugging it could lead to premature repairs.
A Tinytach is around $40 and easy to install.One for your motor will fit any 2 cyl. 2 stroke regardless of stator poles.

Northern Tool + Equip has sale on tach and hour meter for $32.95 works well self powered good for 3 to 4 years.
