Don't you just hate inconsiderate people

Hi, my rant

The river I boat on has a tributary flowing into it. One can navigate this tributary for about 22km?s before it gets too narrow, it is great to idle along and to spot all the bird life. I have been up this river on numerous occasions.

On the weekend I took my brother up as he too is keen on bird life. While on the water I was telling him how selfish land owners sometimes sabotage the water to prevent boats from using the water way (in this country rivers belong to the government), they use low slung cables, rocks, concrete blocks, logs or any thing they can lay their hands on. We had hardly finished discussing this when I noticed a brand new river cottage along the starboard bank. Only seconds later there was a resounding thump, fortunately we were only idling. Turned the boat around and slooowly went back taking a different course ??. BANG.

Obviously the owner of the new river cottage had decided nobody was coming up ?his? river. This was only about 7km?s up the river, we are denied another 15km?s!!

Inspected the damage, prop not repairable (near to new 19? aluminium), 1 X 0.25? gouge out of the keel on the lower unit plus some scrape and scratches. Man am I ticked off. Had we had a source of flame there my brother would have torched his place (not the right thing to do but that was the emotion of the moment).

To take legal action in S.A. is a waste of time, how do you prove who put what where? We can?t control crime let alone stop people from messing with waterways.

Cheers
Andrew

That does suck, is there no visibility in the river?.....
You might bring along some long poles next time to see the extent of the barrier, then mark it with empty bleach bottles, buoys, or such.....

Not sure if this would be possible, but I might consider helping everyone by removing the navigation hazards. Probably would have tossed 'em up on the bank in the direction they came from. Not sure how hard I could toss 'em, but I'd sure try to get at least some out of the channel, maybe even up to the place they came from. ... No, I wouldn't, but I'd sure think about it.

Seriously, does the government have an agency to keep the navigable waters clear of obstructions?

An object in the water that is large enough to cause serious damage to a boat and motor at slow speed, is large enough to cause a serious accident, possibly resulting in death, when hit at high speed. Additionally, in most places intentionally sabotaging a navigible waterway is a serious crime.

I suggest that you gather a group of boaters in your area and begin a campaign to pressure your elected officials to do something about this. Try to video the culprits when they dump stuff in the river and get in touch with the press. Politicians hate having to answer for why they didn't do something that is detrimental to the public and possibly very dangerous - especially when they have a news camera in their faces!

I would be surprised if S.A. laws on this varied greatly from those in the U.S., in which case the landowner would likely be held responsible for it whether or not you could prove he put it there. You only need the liklihood that he put it there to win a civil suit here.

You couldn't hold him criminally responsible, but once he starts getting a few lawsuits comming in for tens of thousands of dollars, he'll remove it, asap!

I hate to hear stuff like that. It's common everywhere though. I can't see how we can stop people from messing with waterways.

in canada...once proved who placed the structure there.....a "friendly chat" would be in order.........

in front of my familys land in alberta.....sand bars started growing in the river...changing the rivers course and making it impossible to boat on.......

4 sticks of dynamite were used....quite a show.....no more sand bank.......just a thought......

do you know bob vt? :D

Once again proving that there a very few problems that cannot be solved by the suitable application of high explosives.

Sounds like a 400hp welded aluminum jet boat (minimal draft) is in order. Try Sunday morning about 5-6am........till about 8:30am.
Keep us posted.;)

Good idea! Be sure to call a buddy with an airboat too. They ought to hear that from a least a couple of miles away, as it approaches a perfect position to go round and round and tound right in front of their house!
