I want to upgrade the locks on my house but I don't know much about them.

I have a deadbolt on the front door (I think it's called a single cylinder - key lock on the outside, thumb latch on the inside - there is no glass nearby). The entry door from the attached garage just has a door knob with a keyed lock in it. I thought I would swap that out for a knob without a key and add a keypad deadbolt for keyless entry and change out the cylinder to match the front door deadbolt.

I like the idea of being able to get in to the house without keys, which is why I want the keypad deadbolt in the garage.

I've been looking at a Medeco deadbolt for the front door and a WeiserLock Powerbolt 1000 for the garage door.

I think I can change the cylinder in the WeiserLock Powerbolt to a Medeco cylinder that will match the front door deadbolt so I just have one key to operate all the locks, but I'm not 100% sure.

I would appreciate your opinions on these or other brands and also if you know if I can change the cylinder in the WeiserLock Powerbolt.

Thanks!

Not sure of your current lock, as to whether the deadbolt you are referring to would be different than a standard bolt size.

We had a dead-bolt lock and the standard knob key lock, on our front door.

We replaced it with a complete keyless unit, that basically locks and unlocks the dead-bolt. The knob now only latches the door. There is a key lock to open manually.

The whole kit replaced everything with no modifications to the door.

The unit is a cheapie no-name from Menards, about $60. it works great and is worth it's weight in gold, especially with kids.

I'm sure the name brands you mentioned should work as well or better.

keyless locks are great.

The new keyless locks maybe better, but some of the older ones would show wear on the number pad. Anyone looking at it can see your code numbers and with enough time can get them in the right order.

For what's it's worth

Yep, it's just as easy to break a window.

Yep, you're right. I guess I didn't think about that. Who cares how secure the deadbolt is as long as you've got one that works. If someone wants in bad enough, there isn't much difference between taking the time to bump or pick the lock, kick the door in, or break a window.

I do have an alarm system that I think is pretty good. It's got all the bells and whistles, and it's monitored.

On top of that, we have a cat that doesn't like strangers much... Sometimes she'll even chase me out of the house.

Thanks for the input, and saving me a lot of bucks! :)

Done deal. I replaced all the locks and deadbolts with good quality locks from the hardware store. I did install a keyless number pad lock on the garage door.

Everything is keyed alike, was easy to install and configure and it didn't take much time even with drilling the hole on the garage door for the new deadbolt(there wasn't one prior).

Thanks for everyone's input.
