WOW!!!! I'm glad I don't in your neighborhood...........

Guess we are still a little bit of Mayberry. In our neighborhood we walk into each other's houses and yell "hello!" There is a level of security and trust there. We get the Schwann's guy and the meat salesmen coming through occasionally, but they know which houses to go to and which ones to stay away from. (Oh, and neighbor across the street is a SnapOn manager, but he is no problem, he doesn't sell to people, only dealers! LOL!)

Since this is very rural and EVERYONE hunts, so there are multiple guns at EVERY house, if any crime happens it is usually the guy from out of the area that learns a valuable lesson, or someone that is so messed up they have no clue what they are doing. Shucks, rifle season for deer starts on the Monday after Thanksgiving and the schools are closed that Monday AND Tuesday.

Sort of off topic but you should reconsider that sign. I used to have something along those same lines because people from the city would drive into the farm and get out assuming my german shepards were "friendly" when in fact they were not and I didn't want anyone biten. My lawyer seen the sign one day and said, "Take it down as fast as you can". When I asked why he said that having a sign like that is an admission in the eyes of the law that I knowingly have dangerous dogs and don't keep them chained or in their kenel.

Now I have a sign that says, "Stay in car and Honk".

Not something I considered. Most dangerous thing about my lab is the piles he leaves behind! I guess maybe I should take down the Jolly Roger I fly under Old Glory in the front yard and the NRA decals on my front door too so as not to admit my gun-toting pirate tendancies? ;):D

Unfortunately in the world we live in, I do understand what you are trying to convey and appreciate the heads up.

WOW!!!! I'm glad I don't in your neighborhood.....................Or at your level of insecurity.

My area is rural and neighbors are the Mayberry type. However.....senior citizens in rural areas of this state have been targeted, scammed, robbed and and even killed by outsiders. Like protecting and preparing yourself from natural disasters I think it is also prudent to have a plan of action to protect your family from the very real threat of crime. I am not paranoid I know of too many instances of seniors opening their door and FACING a gun. I had a friend that was shot with a shotgun by 2 men breaking into his home...he managed to grab his AR15 and shot both of them killing one and seriously wounding the other as he was running from the house. The two men were part of a burglary ring from 50 miles away.

Re: Door to Door Salesmen(people)

A few years ago when my family's business collapsed due to my parents divorcing I found myself unemployed and a buddy of mine convinced me to try selling AT&T U-Verse service door to door with him out of a local office that does that.

Interestingly, around 90% of their sign ups are from door to door sales, not people calling in from commercials or clicking on banner ads, despite the cost that AT&T had to pay out for each referral (ranging from like $60 to over $100 each).

We were more or less pretty polite and avoided "no soliciting" houses, though they argued that since we were visiting on behalf of AT&T it would be alright (and there are still tons of people with basic home phone service, at least).

I didn't make it too well, but my buddy is "a great talker"...many times he'd knock, have people crack open the door to hear why he was knocking, and a few moments later we'd get invited in to their living room and call in their order. He could go out for a few hours each day and he'd get 3-5 sign ups pretty easily. He paid for 4 years of MSU with zero debt this way.

My wife didn't answer the door the other day and the guy left his card by the ringer. I don't know what the FBI would be selling.......

Great movie by the way :D

Many, many years ago. i was working while doing my electronics trade and working part time for a mate of mine doing security work.
Saturday morning would finally roll round to me getting a 45min nap after being awake for over 24hrs.
Thats when the Mormans would come knocking on the door..

I answered the door stark naked, only wearing the security belt and an........ well you get the idea,
The guy looked everywhere he could but at me and the woman (30ish i would guess) couldnt stop looking
that was roughly 15 years ago, and they still have NEVER been back here

Have a friend who is Mormon. he said that during his mission, the leader would tell them that looking once is human, if you look twice, your not a Mormon. I think she just wanted to look and still be a Mormon..

Re: Door to Door Salesmen(people)

They come to the apartment from time to time. Either 3rd party Power company who wants to review your bill with you (If I have questions I'll call is my normal answer), Religious groups (thanks but no thanks), or like one of the other members posted a door-door Meat vendor (same claim to be affiliated with Omaha Steaks).

Had one this past year though that was very weird and made me think long and hard about getting a rifle....

Just pulled in at night and see this lady strolling through the grass after a pickup truck that just left. She's saying "Wait, wait" as it drives off. She then sees me and says "I need a ride to the Home Depot as my baby is there all alone". Coming out of the woods about this time is a shaggy looking guy as well. I tell her I can't help her as my baby is in the apartment complex waiting for me (more than likely a mistake and I won't make that again). Last time I saw them in the area.

I'm all for helping people in need but things did not add up on this. First, a local restaurant is right across the street from my apartment so they could have gone there to call a cab. Next, the Home Depot she is referring to is (2) city blocks away...she could walk her butt there quicker than harassing people for a ride. Finally, who in their right mind leaves a baby at the Home Depot? Was he/she checking out the latest power tools or looking at plywood for a renovation project?? And definitely I should have called the cops...will if it happens again.

My only concern about a rifle in my apartment is this...safety. With an 8 month old who just loves to tinker and is too darn smart for his own good, I don't think it mixes well right now. My own personal choice but should this happen again, I'll revisit the subject with my wife.
